Zaandam alaska sept 18 - not a review

Hi Starwin! It's Jim & Alison from our Zuiderdam roll call. We left on the 18th from Vancouver with you, but we were on the Century. We're still aboard, we're in San Francisco today and we'll be back in San Diego Sunday.

We were able to make all of our ports with no problem except Hubbard Glacier. Tracy Arm was substituted and it was our only nice day until we got to Seattle. We passed each other at the entrance to Tracy Arm, you were on your way out as we went in. I wonder if you needed to turn around due to timing. We went all the way to Sawyer Glacier and got a great view of it. It was a good 5 to 6 hour round trip and I imagine it's limited to one ship at a time (it's very narrow). I'm sorry you weren't able to go all the way in.

Our captain said we had encountered six storms while in Alaska. The worst was the fifth. The bridge recorded winds to 76 knots and 24 foot seas.

All of the ports were wet, cold and windy, but we had a great time!

We'll meet you in April!

Hi Alison, I was thinking of you as our ships passed and gave you a wave, LOL. We never did get all the way into Tracy Arm, so no glaciers for us. In fact, our Captain said he was ensuring that your ship got in there!!!! I think they were all telling fibs that week. It seems every ship was the only one that kept to its itinerary, LOL.

We had a blast in spite of the weather - luckily we are good sailors. Mind you, the day after we got home my house kept rocking and rolling and I was holding the walls to get around!

See you in April.

I did enquire through my TA, and was told no one on the Zaandam received any compensation, but that passengers on the Statendam did because they missed every port. Which ship were your friends on?

Well, we actually made it to Juneau but we missed everything else. It was quite an interesting experience. However, despite the rough seas and altered itinerary it was very relaxing.

Thank you for your information. I booked our cruise for my husband's 50th birthday without thinking about it being late in season. Your info helped me convince myself it was a good thing :o

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

Alaska can be quite fickle. You never know what kind of weather you may run into. Whether dealing with the early sailings in May or late in the season September it can vastly differ. So just because you are doing the late Alaska sailing you could have decent weather or not. Hope you have a wonderful cruise for your DH birthday, Alaska is beautiful any time in the season and a great place to cruise.
