Insurance and Cruise Line Problems

In reading the thread about the Star, I can sympathize with those whose plans are disrupted. I know I would be terribly disappointed if something happens to our cruise.

I do have a question though? Won't trip insurance cover the cost of airline tickets? If some one books their own air, and buys trip protection isurance, I would think this should be covered?

We booked our own (discounted and nonrefundable) air and also pre and post cruise hotel (also nonrefundable). When we were forced to cancel our cruise, we received a check from the insurance company for every cent we spent. The only thing not covered was the MBNA certificate we had used as partial cruise payment and NCL returned that to us after I called and explained the situation. Trip insurance is the only way to go. So the answer is yes, they do refund. If a person chooses not to purchase the insurance, my feeling is they only have themselves to blame for monies lost.

Make sure when you buy your insurance that you make it very clear that you want to insure the pre- and post- plus airfare.

Since we had "free" tickets (used miles)- our TA said we could not get reimbursed if we insured our airfare. However, somewhere along the line, when discussing the fact that the hotel would not charge us if we cancelled by 6:00 pm the "day of" - we neglected to get coverage for our entire vacation. Just because the hotel and airfare cancellations would not cost us out-of-pocket expenses if we cancelled, doesn't mean there are no other emergencies that could come up.

Due to the above circumstances, I neglected to get insurance for anything other than the cruise. Luckily, the only expense that came up was a $90 emergency trip to the dentist in San Juan. It wasn't until I tried to get reimbursement did I find out about what could've been a disasterous mistake.

If I had not even considered purchasing insurance - I would've felt I took my chances and lost the gamble - but to find out I had goofed like that??

You can be sure I will be more careful in the future.
