bahamabound Posted April 5, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 5, 2004 Hi! I am new to the boards and sailing on my first cruise on the Dawn in June. Can we bring wine and other alcohol aboard to drink in our cabin? Thanks in advance!!
CarolynHahn Posted April 5, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 5, 2004 Just returned from the Dawn yesterday. I had two bubble wrapped bottles of wine and one container of boxed wine in my luggage. I'd read that the bubble wrap somehow distorted the image when the bags were x-rayed and wouldn't be detected....not true. We kept waitng for our luggage to be delivered after emabarking and then noticed a letter in the mailbox outside our door informing us that there had been something undesirable detected in our bags and to report to one of the meeting rooms on deck 12 between 5 and 7PM and that we would be reuqested to open our luggage in the presence of an NCL staff member and remove the item. Well, we were hardly among the minority. The line was really long and the process took ahwile but it was finally our turn and my huband removed one bottle from his bag and I removed the other one from mine but said nothing about the box of wine and it made it back to our room. Actually, as I was reaching n the bag for the bottle I told the staff member that I needed to be quick so that my husband didn't see the birthday gift that I had packed for him and he was very understanding and didn't make an any attempt to search the bag any further. I didn't really see any of the staff members actually go through the bags themselves at all. They just seemed to have a list of what to expect the passenger to give them. I think that the x-ray only detected the bottles but I can't say for sure. The bottles were confiscated and were returned to us in the same room yesterday morning before disembarking. When I went to pick them up, I was amazed how many other bottles (liquor, beer, wine) were waiting to be retrieved. I did speak to some other passengers that had successfully smuggled alcohol on the ship but didn't really ask the specifics of how they did it. So good luck if you choose to try. If I were going to do it again. I think I'd stick to the boxed wine, which by the way was Delicato 2000 Shiraz, rated a best buy by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. It's really not bad, if you like red wine. Have a wonderful cruise! Ours was great. We had spectacular weather and the Dawn is beautiful. You'll love it. trish1c Posted April 5, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 5, 2004 You cannot bring hard alcohol of any sort aboard. It will be taken from you & returned at the end of the trip. If you care enough about this issue, there are all sorts of threads about true smuggling -- filling water bottles etc. As for wine, if it's something they don't sell aboard ship, you can pay a corkage fee. They'll still take it, but you can ask for it in the dining room. The glass bottles will be detected. If you are going to bring wine, I'd just be up front about it, hand it to the people when you board & have it delivered to dinner. I guess the plastic liners from the boxed wine don't trigger the x-rays. Trish
bahamabound Posted April 5, 2004 Author #6 Share Posted April 5, 2004 So I can buy it on the ship, give it back to them and they give it to us at dinner? That's OK. Is room service 24 hours so that I can order drinks to the cabin? Thanks!
sterling2 Posted April 5, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 5, 2004 We have pre-ordered wine and scotch for our Baltic and transatlantic cruises. So much easier than trying to bring it on board. I didn't realize you could do this with NCL but really happy we called and asked about it. Both should be in our cabin when we sail. willydoit Posted April 6, 2004 #8 Share Posted April 6, 2004 On the Sea last week both 6 pack plastic water bottles and a 12 pack triggered the "undesirable" warning. Both made it to my cabin after suitcase opening and inspection with the "undesirables police". So, it's not the glass that's triggering the x-ray, it's the shape of the item. BTW, I brought six packs of local cerveza back on board from shore excursions in both Cozumel and Cancun, no questions asked upon re-embarkation. jodon2 Posted April 7, 2004 #10 Share Posted April 7, 2004 What if? I bought a 12 pack of diet Pepsi at home and replaced the cans with Budweiser cans and resealed the carton and put it in my luggage, will that be detected?
