things to do in Galveston

Can anyone give me some ideas on what to do in Galveston. We get back on Sunday morning Feburary 26 and most of our party have evening flights out of Hobby. Also any ideas on what to do with our luggage would be helpful

I live about an hour from Galveston and we drive over so transportation and luggage storage isn't a problem. I can help with some ideas on things to do.

 

Moody Gardens is interesting for both adults and kids. It has an aquarium, rain forest with plants & animals, 3D IMAX, and various displays. It is a bit of a drive (10 min) from the pier area.

 

The Lone Star Flight Museum is right next to Moody Gardens. There are several renovated planes and they also offer rides in some of the historic planes.

 

The Elissa tall ship and Ocean Star Rig museums are both right by the pier, within walking distance.

 

The Strand shopping district is also within walking distance of the pier. There are restaurants and shops to browse. Get some ice cream from King's.

 

If you don't want to stay in the Galveston area, Kemah is a few miles north of Galveston towards Houston. It has restaurants, shops, and a small amusement park. It's not too far from Hobby airport.

Here is another option for you to check. Johnson Space center. Great place to visit and tour. You can actual touch a pice of the moon:eek:.

It's hard to tell without knowing the age and activity level and interests of your group. Here's some ideas in addition to those mentioned.

 

Hotel Galvez has a beautiful Sunday Brunch that is fairly renowned. Lovely historic hotel on the Seawall. You might check with them if they would store your luggage for the day.

 

For casual lunch, The Spot is great for burgers - also on the Seawall. Great beach vibe.

 

There are bikes and buggies to rent to go along the Seawall.

 

As mentioned, the Strand has lots of eating venues and some fun boutique shopping.

 

If history and architecture are of interest, there are some great Victorian home tours. Galveston has some amazing early 20th Century examples.

The Strand is really neat, all kinds of different stores, even if you don't buy anything, they're just different. There is a really really good mexican restaurant near by, but for the life of me can't remember the name, it isn't a chain restaurant, maybe someone else can help.

For breakfast / lunch, there is Sunflower Bakery at 14th & Post Office (I think)

 

Just off the Strand is Star Drugstore which is a renovated drug store that has a lunch counter.

 

The Spot and Fish Tales on Seawall for lunch

 

Get a list of the tree carvings that were made from trees that were damaged by hurricane Ike. Instead of tearing down the trees, an artist carved figures. It is like a scavenger hunt to find them.

 

Take a horse & buggy ride and learn about the history of Galveston.

 

The Great Storm museum which tells about the Great 1900 hurricane and how Galveston rebuilt. Then eat at Fisherman's Wharf which is right next to the cruise terminal.

 

Stroll along the Seawall and visit Murdochs bath house which is a gift shop that was destroyed in Ike and rebuilt in same location.

The cruise lines offer a service where you can check your luggage thru to your final deatination. The cost is around $20 and well worth it. You set your bags out the night before and don't see them again til you get home. No more dragging bags around!
