Stayed in Hotel 1898 last May. LOVED it. Great breakfast up on the roof overlooking Las Ramblas and the city (but pricey at 24Euro). Worth it, though.

Rooms had hardwood floors. Was perfectly quiet, very European with marble in the bathroom. Beds were fine. In room safe provided. Free internet and use of computers in the business center on 2nd floor.

Most of the staff spoke English, especially at front desk and we were able to walk out the front door to Las Ramblas. Forty feet or so from the Boqueria Market, which is worth a look. Walking distance to Sagrada Familia, Barri Gotic, Plaza Cataluyna (HOHO bus) and two metro stations.
