crossing the bass strait - sydney to hobart

we are considering a short cruise from sydney to melbourne and then hobart.

is the bass strait usually a rough passage of water to travel? or is it a matter of the weather on the day?

we crossed from sydney to and from new zealand and although this crossing can be rough we were blessed with smooth sailing.
