PhinsAndGills Posted April 5, 2005 #1 Share Posted April 5, 2005 I'm on a quest to find Barbancourt. A delightful (I've heard) Hatian rum. I am going to Labadee (RCCI's private island) but I'm sure getting it there NOT through RCCI will be impossible... but try I will to find the treat! (I'm somewhat of a rum lover... :D) In the meantime, I make myself an old-fashoned "planter's punch" (which is the 1920's "rum punch" and may pre-date that even. they've been drinking it for YEARS in the West Indies.) In liquor establishments and cafes if you ordered a drink, you got your choice of ONE rum drink, a planters punch. On a tray, they brought you a few limes, a jug of water, a bottle of rum, and a container of syrup. If you inquired what to do, they'd giggle at you and quote this catchy but effective little poem... one of sour two of sweet three of strong four of weak (try this at home on your own... but don't want to go anywhere afterward, it gives even us rum drinkers a "happy" feeling...) the numbers are ounces sour = lime juice (and Kermit's Key West is the BEST if you don't want to squeeze your own limes. Nellie and Joe's is a good substitute if you can't get your hands on the elusive Kermit's.) sweet = sugar cane. Regular sugar works but doesn't dissolve as well. The syrup in the "container" was sugar syrup from sugar cane, something abundant in the West Indies strong = rum. Dark is the way they used to go, but you decide to taste. Flavored rums actually don't taste as good as straight rum in this case. I'm currently using my Appleton from Jamaica but moving onto Meyers from Jamaica as I run out of Appleton. Captain Morgan Private Stock was a treat, too and much easier to find! weak = water and ice. Shaken is about the best way to go. Stirred is how they used to do it, but if you have table sugar, SHAKE it or it's grainy. :D fun rum fact: When you walked into most any public establishment in the West Indies in the early times of visiting the Caribbean, (before large cruise ships, and even pre world war times...) there would be bottles sitting out on tables and counters. In the bottles was rum. If you wanted to mix it with something (water, limes, etc...) you had to pay for the extras. Rum was so common (sometimes more common than suitable drinking water) that you paid for the water, fruit and sugar usage, but not the rum. If you just wanted to drink rum, there was no charge, but a glass of water was fairly expensive during dry seasons... "You sat on a beach for three days drinking rum!?!?" - Elizabeth "Welcome to the Caribbean..." - Captain Jack Sparrow (Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean)

Gimpster Posted April 19, 2005 #5 Share Posted April 19, 2005 Barbancourt is available in liquor stores here. Your problem is most likely that you're in Ohio and have state stores.
PhinsAndGills Posted April 21, 2005 Author #6 Share Posted April 21, 2005 Thanks for the tip, you're probably right about the Ohio thing, but there's just nothing like buying it at the source. Makes a better story anyway.:D Thanks for the tip - to Michigan I go! :)
PhinsAndGills Posted April 24, 2005 Author #7 Share Posted April 24, 2005 I FOUND BARBANCOURT HERE IN OHIO! I had some at Jimmy Buffett's Cheeseburger in Paradise. I'm glad I had it first, don't know if I'll buy it on the cruise... wasn't what I was expecting. Ah well... live and learn. :D
