diving in G.C. - who and where?

Where is the best place for inexperienced divers in Grand Cayman? We're certified, but haven't used our skills much. We may have snorklers along, too. So, maybe a shallow dive? What about the barrier reef? I want to see the hundreds of fish and beautiful coral that you always see on TV, but I never seem to enjoy on numerous snorkling trips....I wasn't impressed with Coral Gardens, for example.

Thanks,

Karen

There are some good shore dive sites in Grand Cayman, but for the most part, the better dives are done from a boat. Here is a website that lists 33 dive operators on Grand Cayman. I liked Neptune's Divers when I was there. They will work to accommodate a cruise diver's schedule. A small boat operator would probably be your best choice. Be sure to let them know your experience level so that they can give you the amount of attention you want/need.

Head down to Sunset House and do a shore dive. The 'wall' in Cayman requires a deep - 80 to 100 - dive. Sounds like that might be outside your comfort level. Sunset is far enuf out of town to have few of the cruisers there so you won't feel like cattle. The shore dive is easy and nice - you can go as deep as you like but 40-50 is very comfortable.

I have probably 50 dives there - a great place for nite dives. I haven't been there since the last hurricane but check their web page.

You can rent anything you need - walk to the shore - and one of the most popular local bars is 50 feet away when you come out. Don't be surprised when you see crew there...they know the good places!
