Indianaseadog Posted January 11, 2012 #201 Share Posted January 11, 2012 There are appropriate surroundings for children, and there are inappropriate surroundings for children. Being a parent some times means you don't get to do what you want to do..... because your children's well being comes first. A grill and bar area serves food and soft drinks among other things. It's main purpose would be the food. A bar area on the Lido deck of a ship is in an open area of the ship, and it's acknowledged that all manner of people will be patrons at said area. I have absolutely no problem with children being in these venues. A closed room such as the Piano Bar, the Disco, the Martini Bar are only open at specified hours for a specified purpose. The soft drinks there may be served, but their main purpose is mixers for alcohol. A adult oriented venue. I didn't take my children to adult oriented venues when they were younger. They are not small adults. If that's discriminatory, I'll keep discriminating. I don't want to go to a BAR and hang out with children. I agree with this 100%. My children are grown however I would not feel comfortable taking any children under my care into the above mentioned venues. And if that is archaic...then so be it. Boy I could start a whole new thread on my feelings here...but I will restrain myself:D. If another parent feels fine with taking their kids into one of these bars and CCL allows it then that is their choice. Far be it from me to tell another parent how to raise their kids. Nor should anybody on their vacation in a bar be expected to behave a certain way just because there are kids in the bar.
jetskier Posted January 11, 2012 #202 Share Posted January 11, 2012 you've just destroyed the pub experience in all of the uk. your thinking is archaic. Same as when I was growing up in Texas, I went to a bar all the time at age 15 to shoot pool. As long as you were not drinking, there were no problems. nessz79 Posted January 11, 2012 #203 Share Posted January 11, 2012 It seems to me that people's perspective largely relies on what constitutes a "bar" in their area. Where I live, a "bar" is usually a sports bar that is family-friendly. Families can be seen throughout the day and into the early evening. After 9-10 PM, it becomes more adult-oriented, though some families might bring older children such as teenagers. This is SW Florida, a touristy area. I find much the same in other touristy areas of Florida such as Orlando. However, I have been to other parts of the country (parts of Virginia and Pennsylvania) where there weren't many family-friendly sports bars and I wouldn't have been comfortable bringing my kids into that bar. That said, I would bring my kids into most lounges/bars of a Carnival ship, as long as I wasn't dragging them out late (for my kids, that's anytime past 9 PM). Lido bars, karaoke lounges, past guest parties, etc. I don't think I'd bring them into a piano bar but I wouldn't judge other parents that did so as somehow negligent. ALLMYKIDS3 Posted January 11, 2012 #204 Share Posted January 11, 2012 In the piano bars on Carnival the alcohol is not in sight. They make the drinks behind a closed door.Even though it is called a "Piano Bar", technically it is not.It would be like in a restaurant where drinks are served but not mixed in front of you.I had this conversation with guest services when a waitress on the Triumph asked my then 15yr old son and his friend to leave. We got free drink coupons and never saw that waitress again. The weird thing was that she asked the 15 yr olds to leave ,but did not say anything to my then 10yr old son
Rockitman Posted January 11, 2012 #205 Share Posted January 11, 2012 they can do anything they like. we and my kids will be EVERYWHERE they are allowed. I would not hate to see you go! cdamion Posted January 11, 2012 #206 Share Posted January 11, 2012 Just curious, there is a piano bar at the Port Orleans - Riverside resort at Disney World. It is a full bar with plenty of adults drinking. There are also lots of kids there since it is a Disney resort. Are all of the parents who brought their kids there bad parents? It's a similar family vacation spot. The kids can be anywhere else on property. Should they be restricted from the bar simply because some adults may want to go there to get away from their kids? Before you say you are there for your kids, not necessarily true. I was there for business and had no kids with me.

parrotthead Posted January 12, 2012 #209 Share Posted January 12, 2012 I agree with this 100%. Like others I don't go to those venues to chat with kids sitting at the bar. I have seen unaccompanied minors be ask not to sit at the Casino bar and the Sports bar on several occasions. Well thats good to know  Thats because Children are not supposed to be in the Casino Bar.

cdamion Posted January 12, 2012 #211 Share Posted January 12, 2012 Well, I was at a local tavern tonight after working late and there were three bikers there. I decided to count all the horrible kid inappropriate things that were said and as it turns out it was 1. 1 f-bomb was dropped. Other than that, the conversation was about violence in schools these days, politics, plans to open a restaurant, the Bulls, and the Bears. What is the point? Well, given all the comments in this thread, apparently Carnival's piano bar is a much more rough and tumble place than a Chicago dive bar that bikers sometimes frequent. JO-TRAVEL ALOT Posted January 12, 2012 #212 Share Posted January 12, 2012 My husband and I always hang out at the piano bar. I have never noticed many kids if any. My boys are both teenagers and going on their first Carnival cruise next month and if they want to go to the piano bar with us they can. They have heard worse on the school bus and cable TV. I know preacher's kids who are in jail, so no one should judge anyone's parenting. I'm sure my kids will find something else they would rather do, but they're free to stop by and hang out. I agree with the poster who said they paid the same amount for the cruise as any of the adults did.

tiff123 Posted January 12, 2012 #216 Share Posted January 12, 2012 I love these threads... This is the funniest argument for two reasons: 1) I have been to the piano bar on a Carnival ship and let me assure you it was the most boring, least adult-oriented, non-rowdy place to be... I think it actually put me to sleep. 2) The whole ship is essentially - a BAR. The most rowdy, adult place is usually the pool area where kids are to be expected. To the original poster: Kids are welcome at the past guest party, though they might get a little bored there. I suspect they'd be bored at the piano bar too, I know I was. Unfortunately Camp Carnival closes at very inconvenient times - that is why I like the NCL kids camp better.

I've been on a couple cruises where you couldn't get a seat and everyone was singing and requesting songs the whole night - it really depends on who is playing that week. To say "I've been to the piano bar...I think it actually put me to sleep" is a little like saying "I've been to Wisconsin...it's cold there". It's 16 today, but 6 months ago it was 100". It depends on when you go...like the piano bar.

I really hate that argument that the kids pay as much as the adults and should be allowed to go anywhere on the ship. First, I think that the parents paid the fare, second, it is usually a discounted rate if they share a cabin and third, there are age restrictions everywhere. I know that I am not welcomened in the kids club. I do not see any reason why the children should not be allowed in some of the lounges on the ship as long as they are not running around and screaming. There is usually a Discount for the 3/4+ person in the *same* cabin (regardless of age), but *Not* discounted *because* they are children. And in the Case of my daughter, its her and her infant...(2px) so the Baby "pays" as much as anyother 2nd person.
FlaGrl4Evr Posted January 12, 2012 #223 Share Posted January 12, 2012 Well behaved children sitting with their parents at a table in the Piano bar would not cause me a second glance. A child sitting up AT the bar, Piano Bar or not, is just not cool. Same with those that bring their children into our local Sports pub to watch the game. They serve food so I can somewhat understand them being there with the parents, but again NOT sitting up at the bar. .
pmang Posted January 12, 2012 #224 Share Posted January 12, 2012 I do not see any reason why the children should not be allowed in some of the lounges on the ship as long as they are not running around and screaming. The reason some will object is the content of the performance will have to be changed if kids are there (piano bar specific... later in the night, say 11pm on).... The performer can't use adult humor if there are kids in the room and that is something a lot of guests enjoy as part of the show.... The adult humor isn't always crude either! It can be quite clever but it's certainly not appropriate if a child is sitting at the bar... Yes, I realize kids have heard and said worse on the school bus, but it's not appropriate to perform this if they are present. I don't want to argue about this... just answering the question on how someones child being in the room impacts others....

I went in expecting more of a "party" atmostphere with a witty and funny piano guy and it was more like a very tired, tame sing-a-long. The piano guy didn't even know a Jimmy Buffet song - um, its a cruise??? Maybe I'll try it again and see if its better. But I guess the point is that the quality of adults and their propensity for fun is more of a factor (for me) of an enjoyable adult experience rather than if there is a kid or two in the place. If everyone is laughing and partying, I wouldn't even notice if there were children around.
