hwfiv Posted January 10, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 10, 2012 In my pre-travel documents, they're giving me the option of having the onboard charges in the currency of my card (in my case, that's in U.S. dollars), or have the credit card issuer convert the onboard charges. the first option -the Royal Caribbean International currency conversion program comes with 3% fee. Any suggestions on which is more economical when using an American credit card? Thanks!
CaptData Posted January 10, 2012 #2 Share Posted January 10, 2012 It is usually better if the CC does the exchange. (2.5% vs 3 % RCCL). RCCL may also claim another fee as well that is hidden.
bbrad8 Posted January 10, 2012 #3 Share Posted January 10, 2012 hwfiv: RCI uses USD for onboard expenses, thus if the CC you possess is USD based, there will NOT be a conversion to apply. ;) Simply ask them to have your CC company convert. LeeGrant Posted January 10, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 10, 2012 For the benefit of others - always, always, always do not allow RCI to convert to your own currency.
Rare NorbertsNiece Posted January 10, 2012 #5 Share Posted January 10, 2012 For the benefit of others - always, always, always do not allow RCI to convert to your own currency. For non US $ card holders could not agree with you more PLUS..... when you've boarded check with Guest Services that that is indeed what has been applied to your account.... happened to me on Radiance that they had NOT acted on my instruction (I'd deleted A and highlighted B on the form) and when I found this out on the last day when I went to settle my account I went balistic. I was told I needed to have changed it on day 1 for them to apply it correctly.
BBT Posted January 11, 2012 #6 Share Posted January 11, 2012 Good points & well heeded. Made me check my documents. I hadn't selected a choice yet, so went with option 'B' and my CC company will do the exchange.
