dishealth11 Posted April 14, 2005 #1 Share Posted April 14, 2005 How much does a call cost from the ship (Dawn in particular), since cell phones may or may not work? Say a one-minute call to say "all's well, talk to you tomorrow"?Do they charge to receive calls as well?
dosi Posted April 14, 2005 #2 Share Posted April 14, 2005 I think it is about $6 to $9 per minute. I do not think you can receive a call directly from home, maybe only a message. You would be much better off just sending an email or calling from a payphone in port. Trust me, if anything really bad happens the family will hear all about it on CNN. :)
dishealth11 Posted April 14, 2005 Author #3 Share Posted April 14, 2005 Thanks. Hopefully I'll not have to make a call. Is email free of charge? If messaging is free, 1my family can give me updates that way. I think it is about $6 to $9 per minute. I do not think you can receive a call directly from home, maybe only a message. mshe Posted April 14, 2005 #4 Share Posted April 14, 2005 Nope, e-mail is not free - I think Internet costs 75c per minute. Or I think they do have a per page e-mail service too (2.50c?) Do you have a cell phone? It might be cheaper to call via your cell. Or just call from port with a calling card. But be aware that some American calling cards do not work in certain countries. tigerlilycruiser12 Posted April 14, 2005 #5 Share Posted April 14, 2005 I had to call back home for a situation that came up. I think it was 7.99 a min. I just looked at the whole cost and boy it was really expensive. I would only call from the ship if it is really necessary. However, I am glad that I called. For me it was worth it. CruiseShelly Posted April 15, 2005 #6 Share Posted April 15, 2005 Depending on where you are, you can use your cell phone. Alm,ost all American cell phone plans work in Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, etc -- the American territories. W We're headed to Bermuda on the Crown in May. I called Cingular, our carrier, and they put us on an International Plan that will allow me to call from there or reeive calls for $1.75 a minute. Call your cell phone carrier and ask the question. Tell them what ports you will be in, ask if there is service there. If not, you can call from a phone kiosk or station -- there will be plenty where you bet off at the pier. If something disasterous happens at home while we are at sea, they will will have to call the phone number listed in the cruise documents to try to reach us. Have faith! Nothing bad will happen! Enjoy!
Hollyspop Posted April 15, 2005 #7 Share Posted April 15, 2005 Quick word to the wise. DO NOT use Mexican pay phones that allow you to charge to your credit card unless you can afford 8-10 dollar a minute charges. I learned the hard way !!!!!! mshe Posted April 16, 2005 #8 Share Posted April 16, 2005 You might be able to dispute the charges since they are so unreasonable... :)
