sunscreen Posted January 23, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 23, 2012 There will be 7 ships in port on our cruise at the St Thomas stop. Was thinking of going to Sapphire Beach since we have been to St Thomas twice and have done the shopping, tour, and Megans Bay already. Would you say its better just to stay on the ship due to all the people or check our Sapphire?
blue_water Posted January 23, 2012 #2 Share Posted January 23, 2012 No need to stay on the ship when on such a beautiful island! Just grab a taxi going to Sapphire and enjoy your day there. There will be some people there but nothing like at Magens, Coki, or Trunk on STJ. We spent a week at Sapphire and loved it - gorgeous swimming beach and good snorkeling, shaded spots and a dive center renting lounges, floaties, and snorkel gear. Small Banana Cabana serving sandwiches and beer and runners on the beach serving buckets of beer. There is plenty of room at Sapphire, and great views of St John and Tortola and different water shades makes Sapphire the ideal beach.
Caribbean Beach Bum Posted January 24, 2012 #3 Share Posted January 24, 2012 We've been to Magens Bay, Trunk Bay and Sapphire Beach. It can get pretty crowded at Sapphire too. There will be less people than at Magens Bay but it's also a much smaller beach. With that said, you should definately go to the beach. Just get going early, find a prime spot to place your lounge chairs, and don't wait too long to head back to the ship because there will be a LOT of traffic when 7 ships are in port. It could take over an hour to get back to CA.
blue_water Posted January 24, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 24, 2012 I would definitely steer clear of Magens, Trunk, and Coki that day! Sapphire will attract people as I said but it will be very comfortable as compared to those spots. You can also walk to the restaurant in Sapphire Village behind the marina. And Red Hook is 3 minutes away and has some great bars, or you can stop by Iggie's at Bolongo on the return. Another option of course is an island tour then lunch and cocktails at Paradise Point for the view. We took an East End tour on our 4th cruise on STT and looked at condos at some of the condo properties and that gave us a good chance to compare beaches as well.
