Does anyone know why there are so few cruise ships that are stopping at Dominica anymore?? We had such an incredible time on this island with Nature Isle tours and Donaldson!!! We wanted to take a larger family group and go back to Dominica. What are the options? This is a truely beautiful island and, God willing, we will be going back!!:)

We absolutely love Dominica as well. From talking with various officers on our cruise in December we understand that many cruisers have been complaining that there is not much to do there??? I can only assume that the people who complain are shoppers as there is not a lot of shopping on the island. My suggestion to those people is go and see the island!!!! It is such a stunningly beautiful place with so many things to see and do. All guests aboard our ship were asked to complete a survey from the Dominica tourism people about what we liked/disliked about the island, what we had done, how much money we had spent etc. Hopefully this will enable their tourism people to make some adjustments to appease the complainers out there.

Personally we love Dominica and would love to someday do a land based vacation there.

We will be there in April sailing on the Caribbean Princess out of San Juan. Went there last year sailing on Princess on a 10 day out of Ft. Lauderdale. It is definitely less-developed and more rustic than your typical Caribbean port, and the downtown Rouseau is not the nicest of port towns, but the island itself has a lot of natural beauty. I like the fact that it is different from the rest- it's just not a beach destination.

This is an island where passengers have to take a tour to enjoy!

We just got back from a 2 week b2b cruise and this is one of our favorite islands! There is so much to do. This was our second time there and we look forward to going back again. We still want to try the kayak to sea w/cultural tour, and to go 'canyoning' We look forward to going back and doing them and the Soufriere Hot Springs.

We were in Dominica a few months ago on Serenade. I've been to many carib islands, but this one really made an impression. It's such a lush, gorgeous island. Our tour guide (chosen at random at the pier by a spontaneously formed group) was wonderful, informative, and so proud of his island. he bought us oranges from a roadside stand to share, brought us fresh cinnamon & lemongrass and other flora growing on the side of the road and really brought the island to life for us. Dominica also has the largest population of Carib indians, the original inhabitants of the Caribbean. They make wonderful art and crafts by hand. Just lovely.

I'm also anticipating a land based vacation there. Now our ship did dock in the secondary pier so we didn't spend any time in Rosseau, the capital. Maybe that has left a less than stellar impression. but to all those that want better shopping - that's in 90% of the ports, enjoy Dominica for what it is - a verdant, unspoiled spot that harkens back to the Caribbean of 50 to a 100 years ago......revel in it.
