Livorno to Lucca

Recommended Posts

We are arriving in Livorno on the Splendor of the Seas. We are interested in seeing Pisa and Lucca. Can you take the train? Better to take a taxi. We are in port about 10 hours. Will this be enough time to see both. Our other option is to rent a car and drive south to San girmano. WHat is best.

We are on Brilliance in May and also want to see Lucca and Pisa. We booked the ship's tour to Lucca, and then planned to hop an afternoon train to Pisa. But we would only have 2 hours in Pisa? Is that enough time? Does anyone know where the train station is in Lucca? We might be better doing the whole thing on our own and not have to double back. Anyone who has tried it, let me hear from you.

We reserved a car from Avis before we left home. The Avis office was right on the pier within easy walking distance from the ship. When we disembarked the ship, a man had Hertz cars for rent right at the gangway, but we had already reserved the Avis. It was a little more than $100 for the day. If you split it with another couple, it costs less than the ship's shore excursions!

From the port, you can get right on the expressway without driving through the town of Livorno. Head north and follow signs to Pisa and Lucca.

You can easily do Lucca and Pisa in one day on your own. Lucca is very charming and alot less touristy. (Be sure to park outside the town walls.) Great shopping street and lots of places to eat.

Just leave extra time to get back to the ship in case there is traffic. We went in October, so it was pretty quiet. I would imagine that there are alot more ships in port in the summer.
