gpa385 Posted February 10, 2012 #1 Share Posted February 10, 2012 Read on a separate post that some ships have a Paperback Exchange in their libraries - does the NCL Gem have something like that? Anyone know if they do the same for middle grade books (10-12 year old books)? It would limit the number of books we'd bring. Thanks CC posters! Haven't been on the Gem but have seen this on several other NCL ships. I would assume they have it also.
gpa385 Posted February 29, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted February 29, 2012 Just came back from NCL Gem, the selection of books to exchange were all old MM paperbacks. Ugh.
NMLady Posted February 29, 2012 #4 Share Posted February 29, 2012 All of the NCL ships have a paperback exchange in the library. However, keep in mind that these are not paperbacks furnished by the ship but are paperbacks turned in by passengers. Years ago there used to be a good selection as passengers finished paperbacks they'd brought with them. However, nowadays so many passengers have kindles or nooks or other eReaders, so the paperback exchange is very limited. However, you can check out the ship's hardback books during your cruise. jdvmd Posted March 1, 2012 #7 Share Posted March 1, 2012 I wondered the same thing. What is a MM?
Last Mango Posted March 1, 2012 #8 Share Posted March 1, 2012 I've been on the Gem and the Jade in the last year and both had a paperback exchange. Very poor selection!
newjerseygeorge Posted March 1, 2012 #9 Share Posted March 1, 2012 Yes, Sad, indeed that the exchange is poor. Just off the Gem on Feb 18. But they have a good amount of books for your pleasure. I always scope out the library upon embarkation so I can get there at 5:00 when it opens and I know what I want.
LynneL Posted March 1, 2012 #10 Share Posted March 1, 2012 I wondered the same thing. What is a MM? Just a guess but I thought they meant Murder Mysteries. I'm figuring people bring books that are quick reading & these generally fit the billing.
gpa385 Posted March 1, 2012 Author #11 Share Posted March 1, 2012 Sorry, I work in books - it's shorthand for "Mass Market," the kind of cheapo paperbacks found in grocery stores, etc.
