louanddave Posted April 19, 2005 #1 Share Posted April 19, 2005 I wonder if someone can tell me if I can purchase leis near the port in Kauai, Maui, Kona and Hilo..... I want to wear one everyday as they are so beautiful! Thanks Lou
Molokai-Chuck Posted April 19, 2005 #2 Share Posted April 19, 2005 In Hilo, there are many flower vendors at the bottom of the gangway....as well as other type vendors.....right inside of the pier shed. As to the other ports....I have not noticed lei vendors at the pier area. Chuck
ashleysmm Posted April 19, 2005 #3 Share Posted April 19, 2005 We'll be in Oahu in May for our son's wedding then boarding Serenade of the Seas for a 11 day cruise. They have decided to do the lei ceremony as part of their wedding and I've read that Chinatown has the best assortment and nicest leis in Oahu. I've also read that they are very reasonably priced compared to other florists. If anyone has any info or comment I would appreciate it as we are planning on buying 20 leis for the wedding. Nliedel Posted April 19, 2005 #4 Share Posted April 19, 2005 Leis are reasonable all over Hawaii. I am constantly impressed by the selection and prices when I am there and wear them throughout my stay. They also last quite a while.
kapoho2 Posted April 20, 2005 #5 Share Posted April 20, 2005 Just about every grocery store has a refrigerated case with a nice assortment of fresh lei and flowers.....same goes for Walmart!!
bobnsandi Posted April 20, 2005 #6 Share Posted April 20, 2005 I wonder if someone can tell me if I can purchase leis near the port inKauai, Maui, Kona and Hilo..... I want to wear one everyday as they are so beautiful! Thanks Lou If your cruise is leaving from Honolulu, you can try something that I've read about here on CC. You purchase all of your lei in Chinatown on the day your cruise leaves. Put the unused lei in the fridge in your cabin, and take out a new one every day. Ginger are wonderfully fragrant. The showy purple orchid lei rarely have any fragrance. Of course, plumeria is a common one, and don't forget tuberose. As others have noted, you can buy lei in nearly any grocery store, there are refrigerated cases usually near the front door. Example: an easy walk from the pier in Kahului is the Star Market. I was just in there this last weekend, and yes they have that big cooler right at the front with lei. Another approach is to purchase a "permanent lei". The current style that is quite popular (and can be pricey) are hand-crocheted, using that "teased" fluffy yarn, making a full, soft, lei. There are also many shell lei, as well as kukui nuts. We took many of our permanent lei with us on our holiday cruise through the Panama Canal, knowing that we would never find flower lei in that part of the world, flowers yes, lei no. You can take the permanent lei home and wear them as you have great memories of your visit to the Islands. Hope all of these suggestions are helpful. spleen93 Posted April 20, 2005 #7 Share Posted April 20, 2005 Chinatown is easily one of the cheapest places on Oahu to purchase leis ... best selection and prices. Cindy's in Chinatown is our favorite. http://www.chinatownhi.com/map.asp (see #10) Spleen

Arlenedow Posted April 20, 2005 #9 Share Posted April 20, 2005 We were in Honolulu in Oct. onboard the Island Princess. I purchased a lei in Chinatown for $3.00!!! It was beautiful and lasted for 3 nights. I put it in the refrigerator every night. We'll be there again in Oct. on the Infinity and I intend to make another lei purchase. If you upgrade from $3 - $10 you should get a beautiful lei. I intend to spend a little more this year as we will be in Honolulu on my birthday!! suziehmkr Posted April 20, 2005 #10 Share Posted April 20, 2005 Arlenedow.... did they have the opportunity to purchase fresh lei on the Island Princess when you were actually onboard in October?
ashleysmm Posted April 21, 2005 #11 Share Posted April 21, 2005 Thanks Spleen and everyone else for your great advice. Cindy's was one of the shops recommended in a travel book, glad to hear the advice was good. We're looking forward to the wedding and finally seeing Hawaii. gracecarmo Posted April 22, 2005 #12 Share Posted April 22, 2005 My son and his family will be on Oahu during Thanksgiving week. They told me they are staying near the North Shore (Turtle Bay?) and will be renting a car. My question for them is: if they drive into Waikiki, will they be able to park on the outskirts without actually going into Waikiki, and picking up the Waikiki Trolley? I think they want to do the Trolley. Many thanks (alohas) to all in Hawaii that answer questions here...you are really wonderful. Grace
spleen93 Posted April 23, 2005 #13 Share Posted April 23, 2005 Parking near the Honolulu Zoo / Waikiki Shell area may be an option but it tends to be crowded with beachgoers. Possibly during the weekday? Spleen
Bsan1221 Posted April 29, 2005 #14 Share Posted April 29, 2005 You probably wont need to buy them everywhere you go they give you leis.. LOL. But regardless you can get them anywhere... There are vendors on the gangways, most stores, etc... Keep them on ice to look fresh!
