bbiggar Posted April 20, 2005 #1 Share Posted April 20, 2005 Does anyone at all, especially those of you who live on Hawaii have a really good Mai Tai recipe? I have searched many places and in bartender books and these are not the Mai Tais that I have had in Hawaii. Thanks for any input.
vacamama Posted April 20, 2005 #2 Share Posted April 20, 2005 This could be complicated - most Mai Tai's in Hawaii are not authentic and are usually made with a mix. If that's the flavor you prefer then just ask the bartenders. The original Mai Tai was created at Trader Vic's in Oakland CA many years ago. You can go to the Trader Vic's website to get the history and versions of the recipe as it evolved over the years. Of course, now they want to promote their Mai Tai mix and they recommend that but believe me, it's nothing like the original. Here is the original and the only place I know of in Hawaii that serves this is Mama's Fish House on Maui. Hopefully there are other bars that serve the real thing? 2 oz 17 year old J. Wray Nephew Rum 1/2 oz French Orgeat 1/2 oz Holland Dekuuper Orange Curacao 1/4 oz rock candy syrup Juice of 1 fresh lime Hand shake with ice and garnish with 1/2 lime shell inside the glass and a sprig of mint. No pineapple! No cherry!
seabreezer Posted April 27, 2005 #3 Share Posted April 27, 2005 The 17 year old J Wray Rum is no longer available. The next best thing is Appleton Estate 12 year old extra. It's blended with some 18 year old rum. Very nice.
