ODO2012 Posted March 3, 2012 #1 Share Posted March 3, 2012 How do the Discovery audio walking tours on Oceania compare the free downloads from Rick Steves? Which ports are the best for DIY walking tours? Thanks, Bruce
orchestrapal Posted March 3, 2012 #2 Share Posted March 3, 2012 You did not state where you are going, which ports??? Basically any port where O does a walking tour you can certainly do it yourself or with the help of an audio tour.:)
ebobh Posted March 3, 2012 #3 Share Posted March 3, 2012 Instead of audio (for some) the guidebooks for many regions are also great for self-paced tours. Rick Steves' books have some excellent walking routes; we used them in Venice, Rome and elsewhere. Of course, there are also a ton of resources on the Internet now; we used walking tour maps for many of the smaller towns along the Bay of Biscay last year with good success. The ship tours are fine for many, especially if someone is uncomfortable on their own in a foreign land, or just wants to look at things without worrying about where to go next. For us, the miscues encountered while on our own (usually) enriched the experience because they often forced us to interact with locals to get back on track...
