You've tapped into the first thing about LA...we don't express travel from A to B in distance, but rather in time. If you really want to blend in, say "the" in front of route numbers (e.g. "how do I get on the 405 north ?") everyone will think you're a native. But don't say that up in SFO or they will know you're from LA !! :)
