Hello All,

We are going to be in France next year pre cruise...and we want to tour Mont. St. Michel. Can anyone recommend a private guide or tips for doing it on your own. We plan on flying into Paris, spending a couple of days just to see the highlights, then on to Normandy.

Thanks, Carol

We drove out from Paris a few years ago, renting a car at Orly and driving about 3-4 hours (check on this, I don't remember exactly). Watch for speed cameras on the highways. We stayed at a cute Best Western in a town called Ducey that was about 15 minutes from Mont St. Michel.

When you get there, you park in the parking lots near the water and walk up into the village. You can walk all the way up to the Abby and then work your way back down. Lots of shops and places to eat. We were traveling with pre-teen kids, so we had to move the whole time so we finished up in about 4 hours and moved on to the Normandy Beaches.

We returned to Paris and returned the rental car at CDG airport the night before our flight - this was the hardest part of the trip! Had a tough time finding a gas stations and then there were no signs at the airport to return the car, so we ended up going back to the rental counter and giving them the keys.

Best trip ever :)

Hello Carol

I don't know if this

counts as 'tips' but we just walked around it. I'm sure that with a good guide book you could do a good job on your own.

In case it's of any interest there are also a couple of videos from the Normandy Beach areas (featuring Arromanches/Gold Beach, the gun battery at Longues Sur Mer, Pointe du Hoc and the Normandy America Cemetery) called Remembering D-Day parts 1 & 2, and a shorter one of Bayeux, which can all be found from the 'signature' below.

All the best, Tony
