triodes Posted March 27, 2012 #1 Share Posted March 27, 2012 Thinking about taking my wife on a European river cruise in Sept, 2012. We like some of the Danube cruises - but I saw several threads where the river cruise turned into basically a bus cruise due to low water levels. Not something I want to take a chance on. So, my question is - what river cruises do you not have to worry about water levels? In regards to Europe, Eastern Europe but maybe Scandanavia. thanks
Rare LHT28 Posted March 27, 2012 #2 Share Posted March 27, 2012 In regards to Europe, Eastern Europe but maybe Scandanavia. thanks Where did you see a Scandinavian river cruise  that might be interesting River levels I think is a matter of timing you just never know when they will drop or be too high
jacksonnh Posted March 27, 2012 #3 Share Posted March 27, 2012 As far as rivers are concerned you're at the mercy of the weather. You could have a lot of rain and melt off or not. Last yrs low levels were unique.

Ok thought you found one... that would be a new one to try As far as the river levels no one knows we finally are going to take a chance & hope for the best .. I dislike bus tours so here's hoping there is enough water from Amsterdam to Budapest in June ;)
ingo_e Posted March 30, 2012 #6 Share Posted March 30, 2012 A cruise ship has a height of est. 6.00 - 6.80m and a draft of 1.4 - 1.8m . Under these circumstances I would assume there are only two 'cruise areas' where it is really unlikely to face the low water issues from last autumn. - The Seine. Its riverbed has a depth of 9m at Paris and it is shipable from Rouen on for oceangoing vessels (high bridges) all the way downstream to its mouth. - A tulip cruise on the canals in the Netherlands. I have marked all the canals & rivers in that area, http://www.rivercruiseinfo.com/map - all these waterways reduce the possibility to get stuck at a bridge. But cruises in both river systems usually just last one week. And you still have the chance of floodings or extraordinary low river levels..
