Well I haven't quite reached 1,000 posts yet, but earlier today the tip calculator got it's 25,000th hit! Just under a year and a half old.

Cool! That's a lot of tipping!

Theron,
Not trying to be a flamer, buutttt.....
Is math that tough???? 10 percent of $100 is $10 and 1/2 of ten is $5 and that equals $15.00 and 15 percent.
In addition, if the suggested tip is $3.50 a day and it is a seven day cruise, 7 times $3 is $21 and 7 times $0.50 is $3.50. Add them up and you get $24.50. Round that up and you get $25.00 for the waiter and the cabin attendant.
Again, not trying to be critical!!!! But, people are paying $1000 to $1500 for a week cruise and they can't figure the tip???? As John Stosel would say, "GIVE ME A BREAK."

Hey Les,

You are correct, the math isn't all that hard. Toss in a 13 day cruise with 3 people in the room and it gets a little harder.

So you arrive at how much you will need. After rounding a little you come up with $410. It goes into 5 different envelopes... Ok, I'll need some 50s, some 20s... "Honey, do you have any 10s?" Lay out the envelopes on the bed, stuff bills... short here.. gotta go stand in line at the pursers's desk. Ok, I think that'll do it, oops, I need one more 5 here... blah back to the purser.

Or I can tell you in about 20 seconds that you will need exactly 5 50s, 7 20s and 2 10s.

It's not that it's hard. It's just that there are so many other things I'd rather be doing!

TPKeller,

Thanks for the calculator. Plugged in my numbers, printed up the page, put it in the cruise docs and ready to go!

Of course we usually give more than the recommended, but we can easily add that.

Again, thanks.

TPKeller,

it is a very nice calculator....

How about adding $100 denominations as an option to the calculator?

Hi TP,

I use your calculator all the time--appreciate all the hard work I know went into developing this!

David, GREAT idea! DH likes to carry as few bills as is necessary! Sometimes we need to tip more than $100 per person!!! That would be a nice additional column.

Theron,

I use the calculator as much for a checklist as anything else. Sometimes I forget about head houskeepers, assistant room stewards, etc.

I find it handy to come up with my "minimum", which is always more than the "recommended". Then I have a good basis and if I want to add $10-20 for someone, it's easy.

I get my tip cash from the casino by getting gambling chips on the card, even if I am a little ahead at the end of the cruise (and this isn't too often). If you get chips at a table, there is no fee and the expense counts for any bonuses you may have on your card (miles, points, etc). That way, I don't carry it around before I need it.

Thanks for the tool. Now if you could only come up with a way to print the money.

Yep. We "hijacked" Phil. I posted when he was venting about problems with frequent flyer miles and said that the T/A from Rome was a good trip. Two days later he booked. Maybe I should go into car sales.

I remember that you and he posted on another thread that you two may have known each other and then I saw that you were hooking up this fall. Are you SURE he's on the right cruise? (Yes I do spend too much time here, reading just about everything).

Garry says "hi" back at you.

Hmm.. that's a good idea! I hadn't really thought of it. For longer cruises or folks tipping for 3 or 4, that would certainly be a help!

It will probably be a while before I get to it, but I'll keep it in mind!

Thanks!

The tip caluclator is a great idea and thank you very much. Now a question WHY should I tip the maitre 'd if I never speak to him until the last day and WHY should I tip the Housekeeper?

I am well known in my family regarding tipping. I always tip the minimum and many times tip more than the suggested percentage. I don't want to stiff anyone but I also tip according to service. How do these people help me?

I remember the days of all the piles of bills on the bed. Thanks TP.

Shark, Many will argue with me but I agree about the Maitre'd. We have been on many cruises where we never saw him until the second to last night and since we didn't ask anything of him, we didn't tip him. We tipped him on our last cruise because he actually did come around every evening because we had a couple at our table that had been on 34 X cruises. The other time we tipped was because we asked to have the same table on a B/B. Same with the Chief Housekeeper. Many will tell you that he/she is the one that makes sure your cabin steward attends to your cabin properly. Not true, we have had our cabin skipped many many times and obviously the CH wasn't aware of it. We required his services one time due to a problem mattress and then of course we did tip and his service was appreciated.
