Cape liberty, Bayone/ scooter question

Recommended Posts

I read that you must board a bus from the terminal in order to board the ship. I will have an electric scooter. Will they take my scooter on the bus or is there an alternative entrance to the ship for mobility challenged folks?

They will help you ride your scooter on the bus. These buses have very low steps and the front step folds out to become a low ramp onto the bus. I did it once with my mother's scooter.

You can also ride onto the ship. The gangway is a steeper ramp that is a little harder to negotiate.

There are folks there to help. You can ask for a wheelchair for yourself and just let others manage the scooter. That way you can just sit back in the wheelchair and let it all happen around you.

My wife is a scooter user and we have been on Explorer of the Seas for three cruises. The check-in/boarding process is quite painless. Yes, you do have to take a short bus ride to the ship as this is a working port with many vehicles driving back and forth between the warehouses and ship. Walking to and from the ship is prohibited for safety reasons. (Except at express debarkation)

When we go, we simply queue up in a special line by the door and are escorted (both of us) to the bus that kneels and deploys a ramp for wheelchairs and scooters. Each bus can accommodate two mobility devices and there is plenty of help there if you need it. After the 3 minute ride to the ship, you will be assisted off and shown to the less steep of the boarding ramps. Assistance will be there for you as well.

Enjoy your cruise and Cape Liberty.

We have been to Bayonne 3 times. The first time I rode my scooter onto the bus. It was such a pain trying to turn it around to get out. My scooter folds into a tri-fold, and can be pulled kind of like a piece of luggage. Since I can stand, I now get off the scooter, we fold it up, and my husband rolls it onto the bus. When we get to the ship, we unfold it, and I ride it onto the ship. The ramp can be steep at places, but he stands behind to give me a little push to make it a little easier. I always make sure that there is room in front of me so that I don't run into anyone when he gives me those pushes! ;) But it is no problem, and you will be just fine!
