TIpping

Recommended Posts

Wow, do you also know tomorrows winning lottery numbers. I mean since you seem to know things you in no way could possibly know, I wonder if you have knowledge that could be beneficial to everyone. :D

As a cruiser who has been asea since before the change to auto-tips/ prepaid tips I like waiting till end to tip those I believe earned an amount I feel is appropriate based upon the service I received.

I still believe a tip is earned. :)

You can't earn a tip until you have actually done some work.

Why not just tip what is suggested? What you feel is appropriate may not be what the staff feels is appropriate.Again wouldnt it be easier while on vacation to just leave them alone ,one less thing to worry about or think about.

I totally get one not wanting to contribute towards the entertainment staffs salary,But I find on here MOST not ALL remove tips as a savings to the overall vacation and walk around the ship and give a twenty to the people that work hard for a week and make our vacations great. That is disgusting

I agree Firefly, i could never go remove them either.I would be way to embarassed:o

I'm going on my second cruise this summer, we prepaid the first time, and did the same thing for the upcoming cruise.

Just put it into the cost of my cruise:)

The xtra tips will go to my room steward, MDR waiter, and of course room service. As for the bar tenders.....depends....i won't tip the Maitre D...with ATD i saw him once the whole cruise

On our 7 day cruises, I have never just had it added onto my bill on the second day. We have received a notice in our cabin on Wednesday explaining who they go to and how much, and letting us know they will be charged the next day...and also explaining what to do if you do not want them to charged to your account.

Must be new I have never had this happen. What are the options ,im curious if Carnival has an option to remove tips?

The envelopes usually are for if you want to tip extra.

Here is my take on this. I grew up painfully shy in person. I would be so embarrssed to go to the purser's desk to remove tips. I really would die of embarrassement. I would be thinking, I know they are thinking Im cheap (even if you arent, I care what people think about me, so Im wrong, but this is how I feel).

Then you will be on a list that those waiting on you (your waiter, asst waiter, cabin steward) see of those who removed tips. I would die a 2nd death of embarrassement over being on this list. This is just me. Someone on here posted their cabin steward asked them why they had removed tips. How embarrassing?

I just get OBC, buy the stock, buy a FCC that covers most of tips and then count it as part of the cost of the cruise .. but this is why I personally would not do it. I care what people think too much, but thats how I am.

Its just something I refuse to put myself thru. I dont like putting myself in embarrassing positions if it can be avoided by going along with Carnivals "suggestions"

i take it you miss those posts where servers like to get cash, as it puts the money in their hands faster.

and your the first person that i have read that tips out of embarrassment. most tip for service in the method they like best.

wow what took you so long LOL your slipping

I was thinking why wouldnt the cruiseline add gratuities the last day after service was rendered?

I think that if they did all those big sign and sail bills would get smaller real fast. All of those big bar bills and casino losses would feel better if they saved $161

Service is rendered every day of every cruise for every PAX. Those tip-stiffers that wait until the last morning to remove the tips should only have 1 days worth of tips removed. If service was so bad during their cruise, why would they wait until the last morning to remove tips? Get real. Any problems should be brought to their attention when they occur so they can be addressed immediately. Why on earth would anyone put up with continous bad service? Those that want to stiff the staff can do so to their own amusement but, they don't need to find any excuse here to justify their actions. BTW, H8tr, don't twist fireflys words; she says she wouldn't think of removing the tips out of fear of embarassment. We both know she tips because the crew earns it. Your views on this are well known.

exactly!!! Those who remove or adjust should have to write a report and have it investigated by the staff .Im sure most of the removals will stop once people realize you cant or shouldnt lie about great service and great staff

Yep...that's what I want to do. Write a report. Makes sense. And by what power would that be enforced?

An easy solution...like other lines (NCL?) call it a service charge. That way it can't be removed.

The senior officers.Have you never seen the ladies and gentlemen wearing white with stripes on their sleeves. Also known as supervisors/managers

I dont think they will ever have a service charge or build it into the cruise fare,I would like them to put the fuel surcharge on and actually pay the staff what they should get

personally, with autotip, i don't see the difference between addng it day 1, day 2, or even day 7. it still never hits my credit card till the end of the cruise, and i don't even pay that for another 4 weeks.

no. it sounds like even if the room steward never showed up once to clean her room, and she brought her own food and ate it, she would still not remover her tips simply because it would embarrass her.

I seriously doubt she would put up with bad service or especially no service. I have always had great service and I think I read somewhere that all of your experience has been good service except once.

Come on! Really? This isn't the Navy! On Carnival the customer is king...just take a look at the chair hogs flaunting the rules!

As much as I dislike people who feel the need to stiff the help, as long as they call it a tip it is voluntary. Making it a service charge makes it mandatory.

They should just the call the gratuities for the wait staff "food services" then the cheapskates can't say "I didn't eat in the MDR so I'll just tip in the buffet as I go" Covers all food venues, case closed.

If you're going to quote me and respond, at least work on your reading comprehension.

I didn't tip in the buffet as I went. I ate in the buffet for five dinners and the MDR for two, so I shifted a portion of my tips over to the buffet staff whose services I utilized more.

We also ADDED money (I didn't see the envelopes - thought putting it on my S&S was the right thing to do) for our cabin steward since I felt we were extra work.

I take off the tips immediately ( or as soon as possible ).

I do not believe in tipping in advance of service. I do assume the service will be wonderful. I just do not tip in advance. I tip at the end, in cash in some cases or I re-instate a portion of the tips through the pursers desk. I do not tip the "behind the scenes" persons like the show folk or the mechanics, or the excursion desk people.

I am so far from cheap It is in another dimension. :p

I don't care if the waiters and the cabin stewards know I took off the tips.

Since I do it right away it is very obvious that it in no way reflects them or their dediation. The pursers people know that also.

I have every right to spend my money when and where I see fit. :D

I may be wrong here, someone please correct me if I am, but i believe even if you prepay tips, the staff (waitstaff, cabin stewards, etc) doesnt get any of it until after the cruise. so if you prepay or let the charges go on your seapass, you havent really tipped in advance since you can adjust the tips if you encounter any problems. make sense?

I didn't "quote" you. It appears that you should work on YOUR reading comprehension  Many people on these boards try to find ways to justify not tipping. If all of the food venues were covered under the umbrella of "food services" all of them would receive their appropriate tips and the cheapskates would have to work harder to find a way to weasal out of tips.

If only there was some way to have smoking, chair hogs and tipping combined into one thread! How cool would that be?:D

I would tip a chain smoking pool deck attendant who was merciless in his enforcement of the chair rules. And I dont even need a chair.
