shemp2000 Posted May 20, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 20, 2012 We dock in Toulon and are trying to decide if it would be wise to take a train to Marseille or just entertain ourselves in Toulon? We are a family of 5 and do not want to spend a lot of money on entrance fees to sites at this port. Any points of view are welcome.
compman9 Posted May 20, 2012 #2 Share Posted May 20, 2012 You will dock at Seyne Sur Mer, where you can make the short walk into town and get a ferry to Toulon for 2 euro. Toulon is better than Marseilles in my opinion. The dining and drinking options by their harbour is just as good as Marseilles and the walk around town is probably a bit better. numbersix Posted May 22, 2012 #3 Share Posted May 22, 2012 Hmmm....big town (Toulon) vs. really big town/city (Marseille). Might as well stay put...I wouldn't train it to Marseille--no reason, really...Toulon is ok, but we prefer to get a car and wander a bit---great beaches in the area (nearby, car not needed), plus some enjoyable towns (by car)...Le Castellet (great hill town), Sanary-sur-Mer (nice beach town, small harbour), Bandol (ditto), Cassis (nice town, with the added natural attraction of Les Calanques, a series of nearby small fjord-like inlets). If you make it to Cassis, stop in at La Cure Gourmande, on the Avenue Victor Hugo, just up from the harbour, and try to resist the temptations! Great lunch spots all around the harbour, too. Enjoy Provence!
