Great Stirrup Cay review as of June 2nd, 2012

Recommended Posts

The Wife and I went on a short 3 day trip on the Norwegian Sky, starting on June 1st. I wanted to give a quick review on GSC and our experience.

We had a late morning getting on the tender to get to GSC. To much fun at the casino the night before! I actually recommend taking your time getting to GSC waiting in line to get a ticket for the tender, seems like a waste of time to me personally. Sleep in late, have breakfast at the outdoor cafe on the aft deck. By the time we got to the tender (11:45), there was no line and boarding was a snap.

Weather was a bit cloudy, but cleared up by the time we hit the island. You can tell there has been some major work done on the island. The new harbor is freshly dredged out with mounds of rock all around. I am sure in a few years the grass and tree's will grow in, but it looks very rough right now.

Getting to the island was easy, the tender pulled right up to the new dock. Getting on and off the tender was a breeze.

Once on the Island you can see many of the new facilities.

There are new buildings all over the beach front. The buildings include several bars and places for you to book activities on the island.

The new dining facilities were good. There was food to fit pretty much anyone's palette. Being a vegetarian, I was surprised to find options that suited my diet. My wife eats fish and chicken and there were several options that day. If BBQ is your choice then you are going to be in heaven. I cannot speak on the quality of the BBQ choices, but it did appear to be quite abundant.

After lunch we decided to head to the more isolated part of the beach just in front of the new cabanas. We rented a clamshell @$30 for the day, it was entirely worth it. The sun was unrelenting, but the water was nice and cool. The wait staff on the island were very friendly and eager to serve up drinks. We ordered a couple of beers and sure hit the spot considering the heat.

The cabanas looked like the way to go if you were there with friends or family. The staff was on top of those huts non stop. I would have liked to get one, but for two people was a bit outside of our budget.

All in all, we had a nice day but several areas of the island are not complete yet. The Lazy river and the Jet ski area are still under construction. The island still needs a few years of natural growth to make it seem complete. The lack of trees made it hard to find any natural shade. The beach is beautiful and the water was very refreshing. I would have to say most of the basic services are in place, but a few more tweaks until this place is complete. I would advise to bring a hat and lots of sunscreen. A few bottles of water would not hurt either.

Thank you so much for your review! I am getting super excited now since it will be my first time to GSC next week!

I really need to rent a clamshell. Did they have enough of them for people who wanted them? Thanks!!
