Recommended Posts

thanks for all your stories of support, I m sitting ehre as my hair is falling out, approx 80 percent of my hair fell out after first chemo, approc 18 days late, now im about that long after the second chemo and the rest is going.

I have a couple wigs I wear sometimes, and now have many different hats.

I will ask my specialist some in june when I know if my chemo will be 6 or 8 treatments.

if doc says its ok I will go bald or not, but will be bald and weird feeling but as I dotn know anyone and I wash hands often so we never get sick on a crusie I we will have a great time

thanks

chemo day next thurs will be 3rd time

You may want to visit your hairdresser. When mine started coming out, I went to her and had her shave my head. It was much easier to lose it all at once--not see chuncks come out. When I went to pay her, she said--no charge. (And I had had a pedicure and manicure, too--I wanted to feel well-groomed even if hairless!) Needless to say, I still go to her today-almost 3 years later!

I had always dreamed about going on a cruise and had wished for this type of vacation my entire life. I was then diagnosed with Leukemia in Dec 2000. I told my husband then......if and when I get better I want to go on a cruise!!! We started chemo immediatley. Had 4 months of it. I was very lucky and went into remission right away. My hair started falling out after first treatment. My doctor shaved my head right away as it was horrible watching it fall out. I kept telling my husband throughtout my treatments, were gonna' get to go on a cruise. Well, I went on my first cruise in Sept 2001 and have been cruising ever since!!!!! Yep, my hair was very short on my frist cruise but I wore my ball caps proudly!!! In fact, I wear them all the time still. Paula Young does have some great wigs. I purchased two of them but hated wearing them. I just love my ball caps. Val, you go on any cruise you can girl!!!! Life is too short to not do what you can while you can. Good luck and my prayers are with you!

When I see folks like you, I realize that you might be self-conscious, might feel very badly about not having hair, etc. I see the baseball caps, the turbans, the scarves -- and I think: A survivor, still going strong. I really don't see the hair-do (or lack of same); I see the survivor proudly out in public.

Be proud. You have to go through a lot and you deserve a cruise. Who cares what your hair looks like? I can imagine it is awful seeing your hair go. I presently have a friend going through it and she makes jokes about looking like Elmer Funt (maybe I have the wrong last name but it was a bald cartoon character many years ago). Personally, when I see someone with very short hair, I wonder if they have cancer or if they just cut it very short. You can't always tell.

Keep the spirit.

You've mixed up Elmer Fudd ("Be vewy quiet, I'm hunting wabbits") with Allan Funt ("Smile! You're on Candid Camera!") Neither one has much hair, but Elmer is completely bald.

Could I please offer one more response to you? I've had cancer twice and believe me I do understand! You deserve this cruise, you go and have a wonderful time. Don't worry about how you look. But... you might want to consider a really funky looking swim cap, please do not take a chance on burning that beautiful bald head. I'm afraid sun screen won't be enough protection for you in the water that soon after your chemo.

Also, when your hair does come back, I promise you it'll be in better condition than it's been in years. It will be what they call "virgin hair". Never being colored, sprayed, curled with a curling iron, permed nor dyed.

Good luck to you. Remember, this is the month of the survivors! We can do it together.
