Penthouse/suite question

Unknotted

Recommended Posts

you are right, the subject has been hashed over on several threads lately. However I did another calculation and figured that for a typical 7 day cruise on a Jewel class ship each crewmember recieves about 180.00 from the DSC pool. The butler and concergie should probably make at least the equilvent to that (or more) from their suites - again if you take a typical jewel class ship that is sailing with full suites you would have the following:

SF - 12 cabins - 24 people

SE - 8 cabins - 16 people

SC - 10 cabins - 40 people

S5 - 2 cabins - 8 people

S4 - 8 cabins - 32 people

S3 - 4 cabins - 8 people

S2 - 2 cabins - 4 people

S1 - 2 cabins - 12 people

Total - 48 cabins - 144 people

so to equal the DSC amt a Concerige would only need 1.25 pp for the entire week (most of them make more that the DSC on one cabin) as do the butlers - I am not sure how large the butler staff is.

Some people must need a lot of service because I'm thinking what the cabin steward does in a day is a lot more work than I think I'd be asking for canapes and coffee :-) Maybe I'll have to order a pillow too :-)

According to some suite snobs ;), the hidden costs are that you will never sail inside/outside or balcony again.

Which is funny because I was just trying to decide if I was going to splurge for a port window on the 2013 cruises - (Solo traveler - d/o rates) but after I got my Total Rewards discount I found I could treat myself to a penthouse for just a few hundred more - I picked a couple of cruises that afforded the luxury. I'm sure if I cannot find the discount in the future, I'll be happy with a port window - which is what my cruise in a few months has.

Good to hear because I have heard conflicting stories and the NCL website is not very specific on these issues. It just says no haven access but you get butler and concierge. I dont understand alot about the suites that dont have Haven access. They get everything but just cant swim in a Haven pool? Sounds like quite the deal. I sure wish they had that on Epic

Epic is great for the suites, the lowest suite gets full access to the Haven.:p

  • 4 weeks later...

OK, everyone, I've got my first ever suite booked for next Summer on the Jewel to Alaska. We will be in an SE forward Penthouse (10000). Not a Haven Suite.

I'm trying to convince my father and his wife to book a suite with NCL, like the one I have as they are priced quite a bit lower than the Haven Penthouses. They are die hard Royal and Princess cruisers. They had a bad experience on the Spirit (not in a suite) and swore would never return to NCL.

I want to convince them of the great Suite Perks. One that will be a deal breaker for them would be if they could not get into Cagney's for Breakfast and Lunch. According to what I just copied from the Amenities listed on the NCL website. Breakfast and Lunch in Cagney's or any specialty restaurant is not listed. Only thing I can see close is in the Haven where it states "Invitations to an exclusive breakfast and lunch"

My father is a cruise critic member and uses these boards and roll calls. Help me convince him that Cagney's is included for all (S) categorized suites as I read about it all the time. Help!

Anyone with recent Jewel Alaska knowledge would be extremely helpful

All real suites (not mini-suites) get the Cagney's perk/amenity. The SE forward penthouse suites definitely do. They will also have many other perks. The main one they will NOT have is access to the Haven area. Hope this helps. BTW, penthouses 10000 and 10500 are larger than the other penthouses and have a smaller balcony, but the balcony is still very large.

Thanks, I feel confident we will get the perks, but when I was on the NCL website gathering info to convince my father, I saw nothing mentioned. I'm sure if something changes, CCers will be all over this board, so I will just keep paying attention. If my Dad comes, right now PH's 10502 and the ones on deck 9 are available. Trying to convince him to reserve now and he can always cancel if he changes his mind. He's stubborn.

I know we have the larger cabin and smaller deck. It will be perfect for us. We will have 4 in the cabin. I know some will say it is too small, but we've done 4 in and inside and ocean view before, so this will be absolute heaven!

Also looking forward to the butler as my Grandmother will probably spend a lot of time in the cabin. We are looking into renting her a scooter as she has very bad arthritis in her feet, knees and hip and does limited walking now. Always uses those electric scooters you find at the grocery store. She's not completely immobile, but thinking this will give her some freedom and she could call the butler to help hold the door for her so she could get out the door if we are not around.

Does the DOS on POA get Haven access?

You get suite perks but there is no separate Haven on the Pride. Ships that have it are the new Breakaway and Getaway, the Epic, the Pearl, Gem, Jade and Jewel.

OK, now I see what you all are talking about.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I just love this site.

Sodas are $2.25 plus 15 percent auto gratuity so $2.48 for a 12-ounce can.

Water is $3.95 for a big bottle plus gratuity. You are only charged for what you drink. If you want it emptied out to put your own drinks in the fridge, that is fine.

Not correct. All suites have access to Cagneys as well as the other perks mentioned.

We are considering booking a PH suite on the Dawn for our honeymoon in October '14. When you say breakfast and lunch in Cagney's, does that mean we can eat breakfasat/lunch at no charge in Cagney's everyday or only once? New to all of these suite perks, as I have only sailed NCL once before, and Carnival's suite perks are non existent compared to NCL. Thanks in advance.

Yes, suite guests (full suites, not minis) may dine in Cagney's for breakfast and lunch daily. Carnival suites do not offer anything at all. Let me see if I can find you a list of the complete perks for a Penthouse.

Thanks so much! Yes, we've sailed in suites on Carnival several times and the only perk was priority embarkation/debarkation, which was a joke anyways.
