Walking from Hernesaari to Market Square

Recommended Posts

Is this doable and practical? If so, what is the distance and recommended route?

We walked to market square. It is a rather long walk...as I recall, it took about 45 minutes. We also walked back (following the shore which was a lovely walk) which took even longer. I would only recommend this if you are in pretty good physical condition.

Check out google maps for your route...you can even "walk" the route using the street view tool.

Alternately, you can catch the bus.

We had planned on walking from the ship to Market Square, so I researched on Google Maps the different paths to take. If you walked straight across it was about a 35 minute walk. Walking along the shore was about a 45 minute walk. We ended up taking the ships shuttle to town because it was raining. We did walk back along the shore and it took 50 minutes or so. It is a really nice walk.

Yes, there are no technical problems and there are decent sidewalks all the way. From quay LHB the distance is 1.7-1.8 miles, from quay LHB it's some 2.3-2.4 miles.

I highly recommend you plan a route on Google maps.

A few notes:

At first corner in the harbor area take "Eiranranta" past the new houses and then turn left onto "Telakkakatu". DON'T use the "Hylkeenpyyntajänkatu-Munkkisaarenkatu" route.

The easiest way is then "Telakkakatu"/ "Hietalahdenranta" all the way to the Boulevard (Bulevardi) and then following it and the Southern Esplanade (Eteläesplanadi) to the Market Square. A very nice route that will take you through downtown.

Another option is to turn right and follow the sea past the small boat harbor and then short cutting the embassy area along the "Puistokatu" to the South Harbor (Olympia Quay) and following the harbor along "Laivasillankatu" to the Market. This route is perhaps slightly longer.

For the adventurous and confident map reader there are then a lot of options between these two to make the route shorter. All the streets are decent. When planning note that "Korkeavuorenkatu" is very hilly as is southern part of "Kasaminkatu".

One example: Telakkakatu-Tehtaankatu-Laivurinkatu-Laivurinrinne-Annankatu-Uudenmaankatu-Erottajankatu-Eteläesplanadi".
