Vacation Protection Plan and ES

We are before final payment date, but will probably need to cancel now and rebook later, after some medical issues are cleared up. I hope someone who has done this can tell me what to expect. Because we have VPP (Carnival's Insurance plan), will we get a refund of some or all of our deposit, or will it still be held for a future booking instead? Will VPP cover the $50 per person fee?

 

I can live with any of these options, but I'm hoping that having VPP will lessen the impact of the cancellation. I appreciate any information, especially from those of you who may have had to do this.
