Adventures ahead Posted July 8, 2012 #1 Share Posted July 8, 2012 August 15 is a holiday in Italy and that's our day in Rome. I understand that the religious sites will be closed, that many businesses and shops close in August and many residents leave the cities for holidays. We've been to Rome before and have already visited the Vatican and other religious sites that will be closed. I read that the Colosseum will be open and that transportation will operate on a holiday schedule. I'm trying to get a feel, from someone with first-hand information, for how busy the city will be (compared to a normal mid-week August day) and guessing that we should expect more people at the sites that remain open. Will there be celebrating in the streets (that may result in taking longer to get around)?

cruiseluv Posted July 10, 2012 #4 Share Posted July 10, 2012 Any predictions on the crowds in Rome on the August 15 holiday? Many of the locals will be gone for their summer vacations. Crowds of tourists will probably be the same as in any other summer day. I don't think churches will be closed as this is a religious holiday. Rare Keith1010 Posted July 10, 2012 #5 Share Posted July 10, 2012 The city will be busy because it is August. In terms of tourists tourists come there from other parts of Italy and other parts of Europe as they are on holiday so it works both ways. KCcruisin07 Posted July 10, 2012 #6 Share Posted July 10, 2012 We were in Capri on a national holiday, and it was crazy! I would plan the Colosseum and other popular sites early in the day to avoid crowds as much as possible.
