looking for info on guadeloupe, tobago

i am looking into spending a week somewhere in the caribbean next febuary

was thinking about guadeloupe or tobago

can anyone tell me about either of these places

are the people friendly?

safe to explore out of the resort area?

entertainment at night?

good surf at either one? with places to rent surfboards

other things to do around the island

I can give you a little info on Guadeloupe (only there one day on a cruise).

1. We really liked this island - beautiful scenery and great beaches.

2. It is very French - therefore knowing at least a few words in French is useful

3. We found the people friendly but I did make an effort to use some French

4. It is shaped like a butterfly - the left wing is mountaneous and scenic - there are some good hikes there (I can only go by what others said - we had no time to do this).

The right wing seems to have the best beaches. We went to Plage Ste. Anne (absolutely one of the prettiest nicestbeaches I have seen) - lovely sand, palm trees, gorgeous water - picture perfect)
