Spa Tipping Question

When using the Spa, how is tipping handled? Is it automatically added to your credit card charge to your room, or do you tip in cash?

In the salon last month on the Volendam the printed receipt had a place to add a gratuity - just like in a restaurant - personally, I like that much better. This way, I don't always have to remember to bring cash to my appointment.

I would assume this also applies to the spa treatments, but I only use the salon while onboard.

Is this something new or maybe I just didn't realize you could add the tip?

Once I forgot to bring cash but I did have casino chips. No problem ,she said the casino chips would be fine. :)

Gizmo - First time I've seen it was last month on the Volendam - I really liked it, much easier, just add the tip, total the charge and sign it, like a restaurant. They give you a copy too. A big improvement, imo.

Ekerr19,

Does the adding of the gratuity to the receipt apply only to the Volendam, or to all HAL ships; I will be sailing on the Zuiderdam and wonder if they have the same policy.

Thanks.

All HAL ships have this policy. It's been like this for awhile, I just don't think people realized it. In fact, every time I have had a spa treatment on different ships, there has been a place to add gratuity when signing the bill. Happy Sailing!

We cruised in November 2004 and it wasn't there, but it was when we cruised again in March 2005 - I thought it may be something relatively new.

  • 1 year later...

When I sailed with NCL last year, I saw the place to add the gratuity to the shipboard account charge slip and added 15% before I signed it. When I got back to my room and "really" looked at the slip before putting it away, I noticed that there was a printed 15% gratuity automatically added to the slip (as the bar slips have) BEFORE the additional gratuity that I added. So, in fact, I ended up DOUBLING the 15% tip unknowingly. I don't want to run into this "problem" again with HAL, so are the SPA charged gratuities something you actually can add to the slip or are they already factored in? I don't like having to take extra cash with me to get a massage, so I do like the ability to put the gratuity with the treatment charge, but don't want to mistakenly "double tip" again!

Also, how does the "tipping" work when you get a massage at Half Moon Cay?

All cruise lines are different. When in doubt if the tip is automatically added, just ask. If not, add 10 to 15 percent to the bill., or just pay that amount in cash. If you forget to bring cash to the spa with you, just go back to your stateroom, get the cash, then leave the tip in an envelope at the spa desk for the person that is getting the tip.

Isn't it counteractive to sign the BILL after a trip to the spa? Doesn't it just bring back all that tension? :p I wish we could pre-pay and forget about how much it's going to cost while enjoying the time at the spa :D

Considering the amount charged for Spa and Salon services on board I seriously wonder about leaving a 10-15% tip.

A simple, no frills, nail polish change costs at least three times more than I pay on land......color selection is extremely limited...... and then I'm expected to add another 15%.  I don't think so! Anyone agree?
