Saint John's Jewish Heritage tour

Recommended Posts

We took this tour a few years ago. It was VERY informal. We got off the ship intending to walk around the town, but someone was handing out fliers on the pier. About ten of us from the ship walked over to the shul, where we were given a tour both of the synagogue and a small museum. It was free (or very cheap), so we left a small donation.

It was interesting to see the Jewish history of St. John's, also a bit sad to see how much the Jewish population had declined in recent years.

After the tour we went to a few craft shops and the farmers market. We bought maple syrup, frisbees, and some chatchkas. All in all, a very low key, pleasant way to spend the day.

The museum and synagogue is about 5 or 6 blocks from where the ship docks. It is a small museum but very interesting. Admission was free and we left a donation on the way out. After the tour of the museum we were taken to the synagague which was around the corner. We were considering booking the Jewish Heritage tour through Carnival but DH wanted to go to the Moosehead Brewery which conflicted with the Jewish Heritage tour. We went to the brewery and then asked the tour guide to give us directions to the museum. We enjoyed the museum more than the brewery. Since it was so close to the ship I'm glad we didn't pay for the excursion.
