Everything Breakaway!(LIVE on 4/28)

Not sure if it has to do with the size of the ship, maybe those who have been on Epic can have some input here. For a ship to encounter 8ft swells and be rolling doesn't seem right to me. I was on the Dawn in 27ft swells and while she rolled a bit, it wasn't scary. Sure, you had to hold the rails walking down any stairs, and two in my family were on dramamine and in bed, but it wasn't overly bad. Guess if you've ever been out on George's bank in bad weather in a small ship you can bear it on a larger vessel.

That being said, it makes me wonder if the height of the ship has anything to do with it, because the Dawn is a much "shorter" ship (fewer decks)? Has anyone been on a tall ship like this (say Oasis or Allure?) and experienced waves like that? Just curious

Yes, we were on Oasis last year, and very high swells: we were also hit by lightening! but never felt more than a gentle rocking. And my mom (75yo) gets seasick usually and never felt bad the whole trip. But oasis class is wide, so even though tall, maybe it balances out?

Joeski just posted in this forum, different thread that the balcony dividers are snapping off. Pretty scary and lots of damage.

Re: the seas, I was on the Epic TA last year an really felt the movement far more than other cruises even when the seas were pretty light, so I think the height to hull ratio does make a big difference.

Just read the thread posted by Joeski. Oh my goodness that is scary!!

Hope everyone on the Breakaway right now stays safe! Gambee, you better be safe, I'm awaiting my shrimp fettuccine and movie night on Tuesday! :D

:P Have some drinks for me.... it may feel more "fun" haha.

Wow - it must be really windy and rocky for that to happen. Scary, indeed! Hope everyone is ok.

We are all good, no worries about that, it is really funny now we are in 21 swells and I swear I feel less movement. Possibly I got adjusted to it? who knows…. Mom is doing much better now, thanks for asking.

I can tell that much of the ship must be sick, there is much less people out and about today. sushi bar was empty and Blue was 1/2 full, pretty much the same for the other specialty restaurants. But yes there are still lots of people outside free MDR venues.

I can't believe that doors in the front are snapping off. I will tell you one thing, I was taking a video tour of the ship and there was some very scary glass noise coming out of one of the side glass panels. Ill post as the review moves on.

I talked to Slice and she said that she has parts of her review written already. She writes every night a little of it. That is much more than I have done, I have not even started working on my pics :-/. I have a lot of work ahead of me….

I was in the jacuzzi until 6pm (holly $#%$#%#$, that was a nasty wave!!!) anyway back to the story. I was in the jacuzzi from 5-6pm and I was the only person in H2O for that time period, I kid you not.

I am doing some final touches to the review and just watching some tv in the room relaxing. I think my mom is out donating some money for the getaway fund at the casino. She has done plenty of that during this cruise :D.

I think this might be my last post until tomorrow.

OMG! Cracking up!

I was just thinking about the ship after the weather we had today. Just watched the NY news on abc and they said they were clicking 45 mph winds in Jones Beach. They canceled the air show today. That ship must be rocking and rolling.

We also get a video tour this time or is it like how you took videos of certain areas on the Silly?! Really can't wait, I shouldn't be this excited about a cruise review! :p I should be focusing on finals but I think I know where I'll be spending my time while procrastinating!

Jebus, it sounds like everyone has there panties in a bunch over the MDR situation.

Y'all need to go get pliers and pull your panties outta your arse, apply ice to the inflamed area and CALM DOWN!!!!

Give them some time to fix everything.

I bet the MDR thing is cuz of that female dog ( that's witch with a b ) Peter Max :D

Really, what can they or need to fix? The concept of freestyle is the belief that a certain percentage of passengers will want to go to each place each night. Sometimes that doesn't happen and lines build. It isn't like the old ship designs where you have one massive dining room that can serve 90% of the passengers between 2 seatings. Freestlye to me, especially on the newer ships, is more like taking a land vacation at sea. If you decide you want to eat at 7 on a Saturday night in a big town you are going to have to wait. If you want reservations, you are going to have to pay a bit more (like so many restaurants that need reservations cost more than your average dinner place that won't take them).

You are sounding like you should be in the merchant marines so you might be able to captain one of these ships someday.

I plan to work in the business some day, that's what I'm going to school for. Plan to work in the offices, not on ship.

You don't want to spend anytime on the ships when it isn't pleasure? I wouldn't either except I did consider the Coast Guard academy at one point.

When I said fix everything, what I meant was they need to work out the kinks that's causing the hour to hour an a half wait after being seated ( if I remember correctly that's what Gambee said ). Yes I know it's not like the old ship designs. I have done my research and know that this ship and all modern ships are nothing like the Olympic or Titanic. Please don't think just because I've yet to cruise that I'm ignorant of how they work.

I know how things in the hospitality business works, I've worked in all parts of it. From where I stand, I see it as there must be something new or confusing for everyone to learn, or it's everyone decided to eat dinner all at once. All I'm trying to say to people is don't jump ship just yet.

I have a suspicion you were in "more than 8 foot waves" at last report. If the ship was moving as much as you say, I suspect the waves were more than 8 feet.

Hard to tell from your expansive balcony. ;)

You felt the sea at 10 , then you didn't, then you did at 21. Text book sea legs. You got your sea legs, is what happened. Good and bad.

Interesting now you say 21 foot waves. That's big. Things have picked up. :D

Have other events picked up too? :p Sorry, easy to say here on land. Take Bonine. Hang in there. Weather clearing in NYC.

Keep in mind you may get land sick after 21 footers, and after what you described. Get more Bonine , just in case. With what you described, sea state, sea sick wise, use caution, that's a perfect set up for land sea sick. Just an FYI. You didn't feel it, then you did at 8' foot waves, then not at 15', but you did at 21'. Text book. Be careful on land when you arrive. Aren't you in FL? I hope you're not driving. Actually if you moving it's not bad. It's when "you" are still, as in an aircraft bathroom, is when you feel it the worst. I hope I'm wrong. If it occurs, your are not alone. 10% of pax experience this , especially when on seas states as yours. Anyway ...

Welcome back to the USA.

That is exactly what happen to me in similar weather on the Gem. I was okay driving home from the pier but as soon as I got home unpacking my suitcase while sitting on the floor the bathroom became my best friend.

If you take or continue to take Bonine or other sea sickness meds for a few days after you get home, you should be fine.

I don't get sea or land sick (thankfully) but one of my travel companions does and she had land sickness pretty badly one time. This seems to have done the trick for her.

So back home, trying to get Internet to launch the review. But my moms IPad is not allowing it. I'll try some more. Maybe airport Internet.

About the motion, trust me at it 8ft it was worse. You can notice it from the movement in the water in the pool. At 20 it was not as bad. I am not sure if maybe the wind had to do something with it. Although at 22 the ship shacked and rumbled much much more. Just not the slow roll from side to side and rock as we had with the 8. Although you are right, later on it increased from 8 to 10.

Ive never had a problem, but ive never experienced rough seas like that either. So i would never would have thought about land sickness as a result. If it happens i now know what it is and what i need to do about it. Thanks!
