baby Posted September 7, 2012 #1 Share Posted September 7, 2012 have never been on ha am considering a ve or a vd - which is better - do not want any obstruction of view and which room number is a good choice thanks carol
innlady1 Posted September 7, 2012 #2 Share Posted September 7, 2012 I'd suggest looking at the deck plans of whatever HAL ship you are interested in sailing, and taking it from there. It's really a personal choice...not "one size fits all". :D
jtl513 Posted September 7, 2012 #3 Share Posted September 7, 2012 The biggest difference between a VD and a VE is the size of the balcony. The VE balcony is just 4.5 ft deep, while the VD is 7.5 ft deep. (Both are 9 ft wide.) The second biggest difference is that when you are standing at the railing looking down, from the VE you can not see the ship's waterline because the lifeboats are in the way. My choice would be a VD from 4133 to 4169. If 4166 or 4168 are available, those would be an excellent choice because they have double-wide balconies - 18 ft! the2ofus Posted September 7, 2012 #5 Share Posted September 7, 2012 You might also want to look at the VE's on verandah deck. They are likely to be quieter because there are cabins above and below. One deck higher also makes a difference in terms of being able to see past the lifeboats. You are more likely to be looking out rather than straight down anyway. On the deck plan, notice the cabins with the plus sign next to them. Unless you want adjoining cabins you'll probably want to steer clear of those. Noise is generally not a problem, but the furniture is usually different with a shorter sofa.
Krazy Kruizers Posted September 7, 2012 #6 Share Posted September 7, 2012 You can see pictures of various cabins on Joanie's sticky here: http://abqreunion2008.com/Nieuw_Amsterdam/index.html
jtl513 Posted September 7, 2012 #7 Share Posted September 7, 2012 One deck higher also makes a difference in terms of being able to see past the lifeboats. Seeing past the lifeboats is not a problem from any VD cabin on the Nieuw Amsterdam. There are some VD on the Vista ships where the lifeboats are slightly in the way, but not on the the Signature ships.
jmkennett Posted September 8, 2012 #8 Share Posted September 8, 2012 VD cabins are my favorite. Large balconies, near the aft stairway, so easy access to the Lido and only one deck down to the MDR.
