LondonTowner Posted September 30, 2012 #2 Share Posted September 30, 2012 The port of Las Palmas is actually in the city, so very easy to get around. Buses readily available and taxis are cheap. LasPalmas is the lagest city of the Canaries and the best for shopping. If you want to see some of the island you can go into the mountains up to Cruz de Tejeda, driving through local towns and villages. El Barranco de Guayadeque is worth a visit combined with other places. It is a valley where the houses are cave houses. There is also a cave bar/restaurant. the city itself has the best urban beach in Europe, called Las Canteras, which is walking distance from the port. The old part of the city, La Vegueta is worth seeing for the lovely Canarian Colonial achitecture. In the area you can vist Casa Colon a place attributed to Christopher Columbus, vist the cathedral or do some shopping. Plenty to keep you occupied for a day without going too far. If you prefer to see the scenery of the island I would hire a car.
