sick from the voyager may 15th?

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the information regarding the 5/7 sailing. I bet that since the crew are the same week after week, they assisted in the spread of the sickness.

I hope the 5/7 passengers that were ill are all 100%. It sounds like the "outbreak" began in small numbers on the 5/7 trip, continued to spread through the 5/15 sailing, "exploded" on the morning of 5/20, and hit the current cruise as well. Sounds like 3 weeks worth of sickness on the ship. I'm sure (and hope) the current cruisers are the end of the spread (their trip is a 9 day trip-plenty of time for the crew and ship to be sanitized).

I still can't believe my mom was so lucky to have been spared. She was "all over me" (feeling my forehead and mom stuff like that) trying to make me feel better (funny-I am 27 and mom felt she needed to do what she could-and I didn't stop her either :) ). She was the one that thought to ask our room steward if we could stay in our room after returning from the medical facility. Thank god our room steward was nice enough to say yes.

Have a good day everyone!

Yeah, funny how that happens. Our 2 friends and I were all wiping our rooms with clorox wipes, washing our hands constantly and using the antibacterial gel. As we did this, my husband made fun of us.....But of course, when we got off on May 20, all 3 of us got this virus and the hubby didnt. Figures....I was glad he didnt but it was just funny. It was pretty horrible. I was out of commission with horrible diarea, vomiting and chills till Saturday afternoon. I am just happy it didnt hit me hard till we were home.

Traci,

I was on the dreaded May 15th crusie to hell along with you. It was not food poisioning or a stomach virus. It was Norwalk.

Both my husband and I became extremely ill Thursday night. We also were in LaScala watching everyone throw up in bags. We also witnessed the filthy bathrooms. My son became severly ill on Saturday and requried medical attention.

There was nothing, absolutely nothing that impressed me about this ship. Half of the Casino was shut down each night, probably because the crew were all sick.

We too were told that half the crew were ill. This was my first cruise and it will be my last. We went on Royal Caribbean because we were told it was the best. There was nothing the best about it. My balcony was flooded for the first day and half so I could not use it. I could not get a coffee table in my room like all the other rooms and had to have room service on my bed or couch. Then to add insult to injury I was infected with a disgusting virus to take home.

They should use this ship for scarp iron. That is all it is worth.

This sounds like a truly miserable virus. I have to say, hearing these stories (and more frequently it seems), I really wonder whether to cruise again. And, we've been on numerous cruises in the last 3-4 years. It seems that the tight living quarters aboard ship provide a perfect breeding ground for this virus.

I realize people say it's not the cruise line's fault. It happens in hospitals, day cares and rest homes as well. Okay, but, I don't spend my hard-earned money to vacation in those places! I compare a cruise with a land/resort vacation when making my vacation decisions. I'm really leaning toward land/resort vacations these days.

This norovirus doesn't even seem to be confined to a particular time of year. I thought the worst time was Jan-Feb midwinter. But, suddenly it shows up in late May.

Really reconsidering whether to book this year's cruise or not. Although many people post that they'll enjoy their cruise no matter what, I don't see how you can do that 1) if you're as sick, and retching as often and uncontrollably, as has been described on this thread or 2) you're not sick, but everyone else is and the bathrooms, hallways, etc. are full of vomit and/or the odor of it.

Also, I think constant handwashing isn't going to provide much protection because not everyone else on the ship is doing it. You can't be aboard ship and not touch things that have been touched by others before you!

Don't let stories like these keep you from cruising. Any type of vacation you take will have it's problems. With cruising, part of the reason that you hear about it is that the people are all together for the same amount of time. With hotels, people are constantly checking out so there is not as much repeat contact from people to find out about incidents like this. I've gotten sick on land vacations but never on a cruise.

The best thing for you to do is to take your own precautions. If you're worried, take cleaners and hand sanitizers and use them. Remember to wash your hands often. Don't touch railings if possible. You may still get sick, but the same could be said about going to a hotel, a theme park, flying on an airplane, etc.

Hopefully the people from this cruise will be better soon.

Not really. I would feel much better if when I called Royal Caribbean on Sunday to ask if they could give me any information on what type of illness was on the ship because I was taking my son to the hospital and they did not treat me like dirt. They told me that there was no one else on the ship that was sick. I must have been the only one that had witnessed this. I probably picked something up on the island. The person I talked to was not only very rude and would not allow me to finish a sentence, but was extremely uncaring.

They knew this illness was on this ship from the 5/7th cruise and still allowed another round of passengers to board. They knew it was on there when they allowed the next round to board on 5/20 and they are probably all sick now. All they care about is the almighty dollar.

What would really make me feel better is if they refunded my money for this ill fated disaster. You can say what ever you want about the possibility of becoming ill when vacationing, but they knowingly allowed us on that ship with total disregard for our welfare and health, that is unexcusable.

Tell us what you really think. Honestly, don't hold back, you will harm your health if you hold all of that in! :D :p

It's true you can get sick anywhere. My DD got so ill from Disney she wound up in the hospital. That said, the CDC will tell you this about Norwalk: you have a perfect environment for the Norwalk virus to spread on a cruise ship. I love cruises but I don't think I will be booking another one for a while. I would not be too keen on cruising with a very young child or an elderly person. Too risky. And I thought all that fresh sea air would be kinda healthy!

All joking (and flaming) aside, I was on the 5/15 sailing, and while I'm desperately trying to be objective about all of this (I've commented on our roll call thread too http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=105711&page=1&pp=25 when we got back) I saw the way staff (who were sick too) were treating the passengers, sick and well, on the morning of debarkation. It was a nightmare scene. Let's face it, we're human. This kind of scenario runs high with emotion, especially when a child is sick. You therefore have my sympathy, for what it's worth, and I hope your son is feeling better. I've only been on RCI cruises, and until now have been quite happy. Our cruise last year on the Mariner of the Seas, also a Voyager class ship, was everything it was supposed to be, and better. Voyager was a disappointment, in many areas.

It could still be food poisoning --- with the headache --- I ended up in the hospital with food poisoning once and my head felt like it was coming off my body.

Food poisoning is actually life threatening. People don't take it as seriously as they should. By now, however, the worst should have passed. I'm glad you are seeing the doctor.

And I'm glad you enjoyed your cruise -- in spite of the ending. :(

Wildirishrose-I asked RCL customer service about a refund for cancelling given there was a serious health issue on board. First, they said they had no reports of any virus (hooey!) and second, they would not offer any type of refund other than whatever the stated policy said. No thought was given to the current circumstances. I have not been impressed by the customer service at RCL; so far, RCL has made a bad impression on me.

I also think it is more than disgusting to not have personnel on board to immediately clean areas of the ship that have been soiled. Maybe there will be some smart lawyer on board who takes a few photos of the messes left all over the ship before he/she files a nice little action against the cruise line. I sincerely hope so. These outbreaks aren't new news to the cruise lines and they are perfectly capable of bringing extra staff on board for cleaning.

Just what the world needs is a few more "smart lawyers"

Yea, that's it. A lawsuit would certainly fix all the problems.

Your last statement you made removed all doubt on what you're after. Money, money and more money. I hope some stupid ambulance chaser does try to get a class action law suit. The idiot doesn't stand a chance of getting one red cent nor does the idiots that join in. Go for it!

Guest OBAYbee

I haven't followed this thread closely. I've just checked it every day or so.

One thing remains constant. A number of you became quite ill while on your vacation.

I sincerely hope all of you are feeling better.

I have to say, all of the sickness I read about on these boards has definitely given me pause when I think about our cruise in November. I don't know if it's the size of the ships and the amount of pax they accomodate or the lack of sanitary procedures practiced by the pax, but sickness seems to be a growing part of cruising. I know it seems to be a small percentage of people on most ships but if you're one of them, it definitely ruins the experience.

I'm sorry to hear of everyone's illness on this ship.

I hope that everyone who became ill on this cruise, is feeling better. I am on the 7/15 Sailing, and an issue such as this concerns me.

Lets all remember, that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, courtesy, and civility. We are all human beings, that are here to share our opinions, tips, anecdotes, and sometimes tragedies, and as such we need to remember that when we post.

Thanks

-all- cruise ships are subject to this.

It's a stomach virus in closed quarters. It's -insane- to alter future vacation plans on a theoretical...

And to those who were sick - I hope you are all feeling better now, and were able to get proper care. Yes, RCCL should at least acknowledge it... but as for responsibility? I'm not sure if that's possible.

It happens. It happens at home. It happens on vacation. If you live your life saying "what if" and running in fear of what might be, then you'll never take a chance, and you'll never have the chance at living something wonderful.

With anything in life is a certain degree of risk. I could go outside my house and get hit by a car. Does that mean I should never leave my house again?

This is exactly what I was talking about when I said that customer service for RCL sucked. They do not care about you they care about your money. How could they possibly still be denying this has happened. Someone should sue them. The sad thing is, I had my video camera with me and was so sick I just never thought of taking pictures. In hind sight now I certainly wish I did. They would have made interesting evening news.

Okay,

I , too, was sick on the last day, as I stated before. And I am not happy about it and I think that RCCL should have done something more about getting the ship ready for the next group coming on board.

But, up until then, I loved the whole cruise experience, and I will definitely cruise again, most likely with Royal Carribean. I would never let that last day taint my wonderful memories up until then.
