Taxi Tours?

I am going to St. Maarten in January with 7 other people. I was wondering if we could get a taxi when we get in port and have him take us to Gran Case, Marigot, Orient Beach and where the planes land. I thought it might be cheaper than a tour company. We pretty much want some time to shop in Gran Case and Marigot and then go the beach for a while and see the plans land. The other option is to rent a car. Has anyone out there ever driven in St. Maarten? Thoughts on this??

If you haven't been before, I'd rent a van tour. A cab driver will only take you where you want to stop. He won't offer anything special about the island. A tour guide will tour the entire island with you offering info and special photo stops. Well wotrth it for first time visitors. It is a fabulous island.

Yes, I would try to get a private driver in a van for your group of 7. Then you can go where you want, and stop where you want.

Does anyone know if it's cheaper to take a taxi for two from the ship to marigot and then another taxi to grand case .. or would it be easier to use the taxi tour above?? Thanks!!
