BruceMuzz Posted November 1, 2012 #5 Share Posted November 1, 2012 Nearly all cruise ships are built in Europe (a very few are builty in Asia.) The working voltage in Europe and most of Asia is 220 volts. No surprise that the engines, machinery, and systems on these ships is 220 volts. Also no surprise that most of the electrical outlets on these cruise ship are 220 volts, with the standard European 220 volt round pins. Most people on planet Earth buy and own multi-voltage electrical toys and equipment. North America is the exception. People there are still stuck in the dark ages with 110 volt equipment and connections. So the cruise line companies have arranged to accommodate the special needs of North Americans by installing step-down transformers in and near passenger cabins, allowing limited 110 volt power to cabins. These transformers feed that limited 110 volt power to standard American outlets, with 2 flat pins. Nearly every ocean-going cruise ship on earth has a combination of European 220 volt outlets and American 110 outlets in passenger cabins. Due to the limitations of the step-down transformers, high wattage or high amperage devices will either not work well - or not work at all - if plugged into the 110 volt outlets.
