IslandToIsland Posted November 4, 2012 #1 Share Posted November 4, 2012 I have point and shoots, but looking to become a more serious photographer. What is a good camera for beginners to learn how to take better photos.
seadancer Posted November 4, 2012 #2 Share Posted November 4, 2012 There a far more experienced people than me on here but i would say somewhere along the lines of a Nikon D5100, 3200 or something in the Canon line equivalent. They will offer great pics and features without breaking the bank. I just moved out of the p&s world a year ago and settled on the D5100 myself. Now i'm looking to upgrade to the D7000 maybe as money permits. I have no desire to go to a full size camera.
Nole0202 Posted November 4, 2012 #3 Share Posted November 4, 2012 From P&S, the next logical step-up would be to a bridge or mirrror-less camera. They will both give you more features (shutter or aperture priority) and better images in low light. They will cost around $250-500 for a full kit and are not much larger than the old P&S. Another option is the small, advanced P&S's with larger sensors like the Canon S95 and Olympus LX-1.
c230k Posted November 4, 2012 #4 Share Posted November 4, 2012 Check out the Pansonic FZ200 this thread on photo camera discussions http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1694983m Also dpreview.com is a good place to do research on all the different camera's good and bad. If you find one go to their user forum, good information from the users. Tom
Rare pierces Posted November 4, 2012 #5 Share Posted November 4, 2012 I have point and shoots, but looking to become a more serious photographer. What is a good camera for beginners to learn how to take better photos. Cameras aren't really good at taking pictures..people are. Take some time to learn all that your current camera can to and research the basics of photography. Rule-of-thirds and other composition concepts, lighting and how shutter speed, ISO and aperture effect you pictures will go a long ways towards improving your photography. Once learn more about the mechanics of photography and you are happy with the pictures you are taking, you will have a much better idea of the type of camera that will take you where you want to go. Though with the quality of modern point & shoot cameras, you may find they are all you will ever need! Some P&S images: 10MP Sony HX5V Old 5MP Minolta G500 8MP Canon SD800 Many of us learned photography by trial and error with cameras that would be considered little better than a stone axe by today's standards. Grab your camera, do some research and have fun learning how best to use what you have...then decide what you need. here is a link to some classes we did here for beginners and those wanting to improve their photography: Class 1 - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=791007 Class 2 - http://boards12.cruisecritic.com/sho...d.php?t=807836 Class 3 - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=824433 Class 4 - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=835827 Class 5 - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=848866 Class 6 - http://boards10.cruisecritic.com/sho...d.php?t=874451 Class 7 - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1411883 Dave

seashinesunshine Posted November 4, 2012 #7 Share Posted November 4, 2012 Cameras aren't really good at taking pictures..people are. I love that!! You can take really good photos with a P&S most people just don't know how to use what they have. However if you are ready to move up to a DSLR, I would stick with either Canon or Nikon. Start with the same brand you want to stay with, makes it cheaper to slowly upgrade. If you are looking for a jump up from a P&S I would recomment the Canon 60 D. There are many other really good answers to your question, we are just Canon people.
IslandToIsland Posted November 4, 2012 Author #8 Share Posted November 4, 2012 Thank you all for your opinions. Awesome pictures! I will definitely take a deeper look into the cameras I have and then do the research once I feel I'm ready to move on.
