rsachek Posted November 11, 2012 #1 Share Posted November 11, 2012 We will be on a Danube cruise with Gate1 (MS Sound of Music) in a couple of weeks. As I understand, the boat docks a good 20 minutes out of town and there isn't much in the way of public transportation. So my question is, do they have a shuttle service of any kind? Like if we want to do some exploring on our own in the evening? Alternatively, any idea what a taxi might cost?
SOShrink Posted November 12, 2012 #2 Share Posted November 12, 2012 If you are docking where Uniworld and other lines dock, then there is public transportation. The Vorgartenstrasse U-Bahn stop is a 15 min lovely walk from the dock and is about 4 subway stops from the Stephanplatz U-Bahn stop which is the center of town. dwz Posted November 12, 2012 #3 Share Posted November 12, 2012 The subway is easy to use, and a taxi ride is quite reasonable from the docks. Won't be a problem at all.
newfirsttimer Posted November 12, 2012 #4 Share Posted November 12, 2012 Not sure about Gate 1 but most of the other cruise lines ran shuttles from the ship to Stephenplatz, the only central bus drop off in Vienna. Very central to shopping etc.
rsachek Posted December 2, 2012 Author #5 Share Posted December 2, 2012 Thanks to all who replied. We just returned from the cruise and Gate 1 does not dock at the same area as most other river boats utilize. Rather, we were docked about 20 minutes (by car/bus) north in Nussdorf. Using public transportation to/from this area would be an ambitious undertaking. Gate 1 did provide limited but adequate shuttle service to those that wished to spend additional time in Vienna outside of the tours.
