musicman85 Posted November 29, 2012 #1 Share Posted November 29, 2012 Anyone have any suggestions as to what excursions would be good for my friend and I who is in a wheelchair? We will be on the Carnival Miracle Jan. 2013 and do not want to take the pricey excursions. Anyone ever use a local reliable tour group before? thanks!! vickila Posted November 30, 2012 #3 Share Posted November 30, 2012 In Nassau -- contact is gerardblewis@hotmail.com -- only accessible vans/buses on the island. Other vans on island have seats all the way to the back -- no cars with trunks --- need accessible vehicle for scooters or wheelchairs. Gerard is a lovely person. Ideas: Atlantis for the day -- casino, shops, Marina (below Atlantis). In Atlantis -- DIG (aquarium is fully accessible) -- buy wristband (approx $40 pp) for the day at Atlantis main desk. Zoo and pirate ship accessible. Shopping in town -- not so great as most stores are one step up and few curb cuts. Be aware, depending on where ship is docked, it is a distance just to and out of port secured area. Enjoy. Vicki
jodicarmi Posted February 17, 2013 #4 Share Posted February 17, 2013 So what did you end up doing. I am taking a cruise in 2 weeks to freeport and nassau and am in a wheelchair . Can I just roll from the Ports and find enough stuff to do for the day?
elhenry Posted February 18, 2013 #5 Share Posted February 18, 2013 We used Gerard Lewis in Nassau two year ago, and he was a lovely man. NOT cheap, but the vans are completely wheelchair accessible. Did Atlantis, wheeled around the grounds and the aquarium. About a three to four hour excursion, which is all we were up for. el henry

vickila Posted February 20, 2013 #7 Share Posted February 20, 2013 How many wheelchairs can his bus hold? To my knowledge, there are 3 different types of w/c accessible equipment that he has. I would say one holds at least 4 wheelchairs -- but to be sure, email him. gerardblewis@hotmail.com Do not forget the b inbetween as I have done many times -- some nice gentleman in Canada is the recepient of that one! twinbee Posted March 3, 2013 #8 Share Posted March 3, 2013 Anyone who is wheelchair dependent book the Atlantis excursion through Carnival? Did they provide wheelchair transport for you? Or would I have to make my own arrangements?
jodicarmi Posted March 11, 2013 #9 Share Posted March 11, 2013 You need to find out from Carnival directly. It will usually advise with the handicap symbol if it is wheelchair accessible or not (my guess is that it is not.) I just got back and don't remember seeing any of the tours being accessible for Nassau. I didn't ask them because we rolled from the ship to Atlantis. For the most part it had curb cuts but on a few occasions I had to go down a curb. THe bridge was the most dificult part as it is steep to allow for boats to go under it but we managed it with my husband pushing me up it. All the shops are right at the port so you can simply roll around the main area if you didn't want to bother with Atlantis. Most of the taxis are vans and you likely will find one that can fit your chair in the back (provided you can get into the seat - a couple steps in.)
