Walking in Belize?

We have never been to Belize and we were wondering if there are good places to walk around the cruiseport, or is it not safe to walk around outside the port? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Don

Inside the port is safe as they have security guards.

This is the first time that my tour operator, Coral Breeze Tours, decided to operate outside the gates of the main port. After my excursion, I did venture into Belize City and across the metal swing bridge into town. Won't be doing that again as there is really not much to see, the roads are in poor shape and there are a lot of people hanging out on street corners. Didn't feel unsafe but did not like the look and feel of the city. If you do explore the city, make sure that you go with others as it is safety in numbers.

This is the main reason that I prefer to take an excursion to say Caye Caulker which is an remote island of about 2,000 people and safer.
