CRUISING ALONG Posted January 4, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 4, 2013 Happy New Year to everyone, It's been several years since we went on a cruise to Vila. Just wondering what the current price rate is for taxi's and buses into town. Also is Fung kwei still the best value duty free shop in town? Now Ma Barkers has gone where is "the place to go for a cool beverage" Also our cruse is scheduled to arrive in Noumea on a Sunday. Does the La Petit Train still run from the information centre? How much is it these days? One last question, does Rhapsody of the seas usually dock in the cruise terminal or container wharf? Thanks everyone Regards CRUISING ALONG:)
stevekazz Posted January 4, 2013 #2 Share Posted January 4, 2013 hi i cant comment on RCL but we founbd fung kwei is about the same prices as the rest but they had a much better selection than the other in Vila. We just hired a minibus driver for the daay and cost us around $100--this was negotiated.
CRUISING ALONG Posted January 4, 2013 Author #3 Share Posted January 4, 2013 Thanks stevekazz for your reply. Last time we went to Vila it was around $1 per person in the bus into town and around $5 to get a taxi for 2 or 3 passengers into town. Just wondered how much things had changed in 6 years. Like the road conditions and the taxi's:D Regards CRUISING ALONG:)
rugbypopsie Posted January 4, 2013 #4 Share Posted January 4, 2013 Be aware the little train is frequently booked out by the ship so you either pay the ships inflated price or don't get on it at all. Sue
Duck Creek Posted January 4, 2013 #5 Share Posted January 4, 2013 Hi Was recently in Vila and the cost in the mini buses that they fill up was $3.00 per person each way. It has been this price for a couple of years Vehicle and road quality probably hasn't changed, but that is half the fun:p
rkmw Posted January 4, 2013 #6 Share Posted January 4, 2013 in Noumea the Rhapsody will stop at the container wharf and they run a free shuttle into the town which is only a 5 minute run for a taxi in Vila you can pay anything between $10-$15 each way into town
cjm66 Posted January 4, 2013 #7 Share Posted January 4, 2013 We were in Noumea on a Sunday in November. Also docked at the container terminal. We did the ship's (HAL) tour on Le Petit Train, the yellow one. We were picked up and dropped off beside the ship within the container terminal. On the way around the island stops we met two other Petit Trains - one green and one multi coloured. I chatted up the guide from the green train and she said it left from the Maritime Terminal - the nice one within walking distance of the town and a short shuttle ride from the container terminal. My advice is take the shuttle to the Maritime Terminal and check out what is on offer. The HO HO explorer bus operates on Sunday and it stops at Anse Vata, Baie des Citrons, the Aquarium and Tjibaou Centre, which are all open on Sunday. The town centre tends to be closed but pick up a copy of the New Caledonia Weekly at the Maritime Centre and you could be lucky and find that your Sunday has activities on offer. Kiwi_cruiser Posted January 5, 2013 #8 Share Posted January 5, 2013 Just wondering what the current price rate is for taxi's and buses into town. The last time we where in Port Vila a taxi in to town was $10AU (It seems like most transport was $10) Also is Fung kwei still the best value duty free shop in town? Yes, we find so :), plus they take it to the ship (Not too sure if they do it for all cruise ships or just P&O) One last question, does Rhapsody of the seas usually dock in the cruise terminal or container wharf? I think she docks at the container terminal.
