Traveler Cheques

I remember travelers cheques! I used them on a couple of trips in the early 1960s.

Travelers checks/cheques have their uses. I've used them for room charges when I was sharing a room with a coworker at a convention. I didn't trust the person enough to put my credit card down on the room and risk said other person charging up my card with all sorts of things that had nothing to do with the price of beer. Thankfully, they usually act professionally, but you never know. It's not like traveling with a family member or best friend.

And yes... It's simple to use them aboard. Just like using cash at the desk, except you have to pay the surcharge to get them from the bank in the first place.

I guess I've never had an employer that made me share a room while traveling.

In the publishing industry, when my boss is paying for me to attend a convention, I usually share with one other. One shoestring-budget trip, there were four of us in a room together. MOST of them put the room on the company card beforehand, but I've been in positions where they require security deposit from us for other charges, and that's not on the card.

If I've chosen to attend personally, I usually share with a friend and don't worry about it.
