Experience in Bacalar?

My boyfriend and I are will be on the NCL Dawn March 24-31. We are both in our early 30's and are not looking to do tours or ship excursions. We would like to explore on our own and I've heard some but not a lot about driving to Bacalar. Does anyone have any experience going here? If we drive out there and spend a few hours poking around will we have enough time to stop in Mahajual as well? Any tips or info would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Bump? Anyone? We are trying to decide between afternoon at Bacalar and beach too.

I haven't been in Bacalar but I know is 1 hour far from the Port. You won't be able to visit Bacalar and Mahahual at the same time.

Bacalar lake is well known to be very nice but where exactly to go in Bacalar? I would like to read if someone experienced it...

The other option would be to go to the beach. Very close from the Port (5 min. taxi) you can go to Mahahual village. There are several beach clubs along the walkway like Tropicante, Nohoch Kay and others. A little further (20 min. taxi) away from crowds there are Maya Chan and Almaplena beaches.

If we go to Bacalar it will be after we visit the ruins. They are close together. We are trying to decide whether we go to Bacalar after the ruins or the beach.

 

Anyone done this?
