Hello

will be cruising on HAL 7-13-2013 and one of the ports is Molde.

Does anyone have any recommendations to excursions or attractions not to be missed

While Molde itself is not that spectacular, one thing that we did and really enjoyed was the hike up Molde's local mountain (I forgot its name), from where you have a fantastic view over the so-called Molde Panorama to the mountains opposite the city. The hike up took us about an hour, and there is a small outdoor museum with old houses that is on the way and that you could visit, as well.

The hike up took us about an hour, and there is a small outdoor museum with old houses that is on the way and that you could visit, as well.

It is the Romsdal Museum which features a number of old buildings with sod roofs. There are docents who lead tours telling about life in old Norway. You develop an appreciation for the hardship they faced in winter. My father's ancestors were Norwegian, and it gave me a better understanding of their lives.

We also went to a depot and caught a bus that took us all over Molde including residential areas.

Hi Sue, if you are adventurous and want to explore the area a little, there are at least 2 options we have enjoyed there, as well as of course being able to visit the excellent Folk Museum in the town as well.

 

Last year we took the public bus (for 150 NOK return, payable on the bus) from the bus station in the town, which is not too far from where the ship docks, to travel along the very scenic Atlantic Ocean Road. This was a very popular excursion with the passengers on board the Celebrity Constellation and the Bus Company provided 2 coaches when they realised how many people were waiting on the bus stand to do the trip. Not everyone was able to get on the 2 buses, as the trip was so popular because it provided such good value for money, especially when compared to the ships excursion prices.

 

On another visit to Molde we caught the 11.30 am public bus to Bud from the bus terminal for 156 NOK one way. It took an hour to get there and unfortunately, being in Norway, it was raining for most of the time that we were in Bud but it was not cold and we were prepared for that weather.

 

It was a very small picturesque harbour and there were a number of gun emplacements from the Second World War on the higher ground overlooking the entrance to the Fjord on which Molde stands, the Nord Fjord. We caught the 13.30 pm bus back to Molde and it only cost 90 NOK for that return ride for some reason.

You have gotten some really interesting advice here.

I dont know how long you will be in port for, but, there are some nice drives if you would like to rent a car.

 

There is a wonderful scenic drive to a small community and lighthouse called "Ona".

 

Here is a full tour/driving description:

 

Molde-Ona, 31 km, 2 hours 30 min, 2 ferries

RV662 runs westwards from Molde to Hollingsholmen, where there is a ferry service over to Aukra (15 min). On the island of Gossen you can visit Løvikremma Coastal Farm and the Rokta Monument on the island of Rindarøya. Ferry from Småge to Ona (approx. 1 time 30 min), Norway’s southernmost still-functioning fishing village with a permanent population of 30. This small island community has a summer café, several places to stay and two pottery workshops. Ona Lighthouse (1867) is 15 meters tall and placed on the highest point of the island. Fantastic view over the ocean and towards the mainland. You can also go across the bridge to the island of Husøya.

 

Ona-Midsund-Molde, 62 km, 3 hours, 3 ferries

Travel with the ferry from Ona to the island of Finnøya (45 min), where the wonderful aqua park ”Håp i Havet” is located. Finnøya is connected to the island of Harøya, where the windmills are lined up. Ferry from Myklebust to Dryna (approx. 1 hour), continue to Midsund. Short walk from the ferry landing to the grotto Franskhelleren, and further along the way you can also stop to see the Bjørneremshellerne grottos, 200 meters from RV668. This is also the place of the old national border. Continue along FV202 on the island of Otrøya. In Heggdalsvika you can visit a restored mill from the 1880s. Ferry crossing from Solholmen to Mordalsvågen (15 min) and return to Molde via RV662.

Another fascinating tour would be to visit the caves close to Eide.

Its a 30 minute drive north of Molde.

This would be really interesting to see. These caves are a one off in Norway.
