Can you get to Dunn River Falls on your own (without booking one of Carnival's excursions)?

You could, but, the costs would probably add up.

Finding a driver, paying, him waiting there or getting another driver back to port.

It is just easier to use the ship excurion.

Dunn's River Falls is too far from port to walk. You'd have to find out how much the round trip taxi ride plus the admission to Dunn's River would be to compare. We booked an excursion online through Peat Taylor and it included our visit to Dunn's River Falls among other things and it was less than Carnival's price. Have fun!
