ddsdoc Posted June 15, 2005 #1 Share Posted June 15, 2005 I was wondering if anyone could tell me which side of the ship is next to the pier when in port?? My DW and I are sailing on the Caribbean Princess 10/1 Eastern Cruise and we like to watch the ship pull into port and people disembark from our balcony if we do not have any early excursion. I've noticed on the photos posted that it appears that the starboard is next to the pier; if that is the case, we need to see about changing our room since we presently have a mini-suite on the Emerald port side. Any input would be greatly appreciated... :)
spongerob Posted June 15, 2005 #2 Share Posted June 15, 2005 Either side of the ship can be facing the pier. It depends on the winds, available berths, and the mood of the captain.
johnmik1 Posted June 15, 2005 #3 Share Posted June 15, 2005 From past experience,it is usually the starboard side but that is not guaranteed. The ship tenders at Princess Cays so it is not a concern there. We are also on this cruise.
cdnguy Posted June 15, 2005 #4 Share Posted June 15, 2005 Agree...either side of the ship is good. Sometimes the ships even back in. I wouldn't go to the bother of changing your cabin since it's a toss up.
Pam in CA Posted June 15, 2005 #5 Share Posted June 15, 2005 In former British sailing days, the "port" side was always the side to port (hence the name.) However, that's no longer true. It depends on the port, where the ship is docking, etc. In St. Maarten and St. Thomas, the ship's side to the dock/pier will most likely be the starboard side and you'll have a view of the dock area and people disembarking. If you're on the port side, you'll most likely see the beautiful scenery. I don't think it's worth changing the cabin since it's not guaranteed that the starboard side will be to the pier. britsbest Posted June 15, 2005 #6 Share Posted June 15, 2005 And starboard comes from stearing board a sort of ruddery type thing that was on the other side of the ship and consequently that side of the ship could not lie along the dock. ddsdoc Posted June 15, 2005 Author #7 Share Posted June 15, 2005 Thanks for all the quick replies!!! Sounds like since it is a toss-up, we will just roll the dice and see what happens....Perhaps we can put in a request on the cruise personalizer!!!;)
